Difference between drill press and pillar drill?

For the work you're doing I wouldn't necessarily rule out a far-eastern one, just budget for replacing the chuck with a brand name(Jacobs, Rohm etc) as the original chucks are often made of cheese and rarely hold drill bits concentrically. Drill press = pillar drill = pedestal drill as far as I'm concerned.

Problem is with some of them the tolerance in the quills don't inspire confidence if it's accuracy your after.

With the kind of work the OP says he is doing placing the centre pop sets where the hole goes, a wobbly quill is a tolerable fault that can be worked around.

Startrite mercury does not have a mt2 quill so will not be any good for you

As mentioned, drill press is merely the American term for a pillar/pedestal drill.

It says it needs a new starter, I haven't got a clue what this is or where I'd get one, any suggestions?
I'm sure the landlord at my workshop said 3phase electrics are installed, I've only ever used the normal plug sockets so will have to check this.

Starter refers to the control box with the start and stop buttons, you'd need to get a new one, something like this(the overload current needs to be chosen to match the motor power). Three phase plugs and sockets are red with 4 or 5 pins.

Good point if you take the chuck off it looks like a Morse taper but isn't so morse taper drills won't fit

A pillar drill is floor standing, a bench drill is bench mounted and a drill press is American

Is this 3 phase?
There's a few of those boxes in the workshop but none anywhere near where the drill will go, my brother in law is a sparkie so is it just a case of moving one of the boxes, extending the cable to it and wiring my drill straight into it?

Would be interested in seeing that box from the opposite direction looks like the neutral and earth are sharing a common terminal.
Not uncommon years back with 3 phase if a neutral was required they just used live & earth.

Drill press the usual type, pillar drill one without a press type handle instead a wheel like on a lathe and often power feed for bigger drills.
Don't know if that's 100% as the proper definition is perhaps lost in time

Its conduit from the rear (top left), which you wouldn't pull SWA through (I wouldn't even want to attempt that), plus there's nowhere near enough strands to be armour there.
Its tinned copper looking like its connected to the gland plate on the top and possibly also the bottom of the enclosure.

I was assuming the isolator switch with the Swa going in the top was coming out of that box

Its a bit of a hodge podge going on there tbh...nothing massively wrong, but not massively well thought out either...

That's typical of the landlord tbh, the whole unit is a bodge but it's cheap and he doesn't mind me working on bangers there.

The main benefit of a polar drill press is, it runs too fast at the slowest speed. You will find that it is very easy to drill 0.5-inch or above holes using a polar drill.
