I use this company for i/o boards. Bulgarian made rather than Chinese.

I particularly like the smartden IP relays. They integrate with Home Assistant and other automation systems plus you can write your own, the give code examples. Loads of options including digital and analogue inputs and outputs,Wlan or wired, timers, clocks etc. I've just bought one with MQTT, this seems to be the standard IoT messaging protocol.

I think he's written a script so you can draw/print combinations as in 5,5,5,5 or 2,3,5,3 or whatever.

At least he's not completely wasting his computer science degree!

Mqtt needs a server (a "broker") to work - that can be installed alongside/within HomeAssistant, although could be a separate computer.

ESPhome can run "standalone" - the programming language is easier/simpler than the python/c++ used for Arduino/raspi IDE. (Although you can use c++ inside what is called a "lambda"), and the required libraries are automagically added as required.

I'm going to stick the MQTT server on an rpi, I need it to talk to the ESP8266 used to extract data out of the solar inverter as per this project
