Do I really need 6010/6011 rod?

No its a 6010 welded from the shoulder to the holder.
probably a 5mm rod for cap,and powerbrushed/wirewheel to clean up.possibly 6mm
there are some flaws in it,well not really flaws but some not absolutely flawless restarts.
i know a site where pipeliners frequent,the theorey behind stoving and the hours/1000's kgs of rods burned to get this good is staggering.
i have burned probably 200 to 300 kgs of cells,and im not fit to plug in their grinder

Ok, thanks for clearing this up, it certainly is top notch for a free hand joint. 2-300kgs is a fair amount rods to have burned, be careful with those aweful fumes that cells give off!!

If your not fit to plug in a grinder after 2-300 kg what level would that put me at considering I have probably burnt 2-3kg or dare I not ask

One of the first projects that i posted on here was an aluminium extractor hood for the workshop/shed.those first few bohler 6010s seemed like smoke bombs compared to fincord.
i had to sort it quick.
I got a kemper extractor for indoor site work last october.after 5 days of lightish use,the state of the filter was shocking.and that was 6013

I doubt you will remember first generation air fed Racal, buckets? See image. These are ancient buckets, which we fought hard to get (around 300 quid back in the day) I'll never forget my very first main filter change, which basically goes from rear of lid, stopping above visor area. New filters were white as white can get, next shift from previous day, as I was removing filter, one off, two, directors was passing our fab/weld area (we were a small part of a large multi machining operation) I showed him the one day old filter, which was filthy brown, saying to him "imagine what our lungs are like" bit more was also said, pointless repeating. I'm glad we had them when the 6mm copper jobs came along, now that fume is a killer!!

Co-incidentally, I had an appointment with our company occupational health care nurse today, BP-Hearing-respiratory checks.

BP through the roof, as I was late, couldn't park up, struggled to hear what was being said and, seriously, dipped the respiratory big time. To be fair, though. Virus has been doing the rounds in our open plan office, I now have a touch of man flu, which our OHC nurse has put down as me failing badly, new test to take place when clear of germs. Watch this space!!

That's a whole bunch of rod you burn, wmj !! I dunno if I will be using 6011 regularly but be sure I will pestering you guys asking pointers when my package arrived.

Copper with stick is proper bad news? Heck I never knew that did a big batch of it years back no breathing ppe at all

My filter is user cleanable. You scrape off this layer of crap and blow it out with an airline.its a horrible eye opening job.i will take some pics of next clean out

Into your local environ?

Racal filters got binned, then of course replaced with a new one. What make do you use?

Kemper.you sweep up and bin the captured stuff.micro fine brownish,flour consistency.special bin for disposal

Some of the bigger Kemper ones are self cleaning,inbuilt compressor jets clean filter when air temp sensor detects it's clogged.

Mainly the door and a filter mask rated for welding / ozone

Extraction is something I am working on. Still it's way better than what I got in industry PAYE which was nuffin in the eighties
