Do I really need 6010/6011 rod?

Extraction is something I am working on. Still it's way better than what I got in industry PAYE which was nuffin in the eighties

Sorry,I probably wasn't clear.its a stand alone extractor/filter system I have.i never tried a helmet based one.about the same price as the best speedglas adflo

Ah ok, understand now. We use to have a couple of ESAB mobile extracts, we called Daleks. They went into storage while we were preparing to move building, we never saw them again, which was a pity, as the units were brilliant.

I did and I made a small funnel to fit piping too. I was going to make an overhead tray piped up to it and fit the fan into a box to cut noise level down then extract it out side into a filter box. It would be ideal in a sizeable shop taped off to a few outlets but it was too powerful for the tiny amounts of fume and dust I generate.

One really bad side of using racals was: one lad I worked with, he liked an aweful hot Indian, every Thursday evening, washed down with a couple bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale.

He would come into bay when I was welding, drop one where bad gas got drawn into rear filter, then travel forward to sealed face section. A few time racal got jettisoned in a rapid fashion!

Rrunnach, you definitely need to get welder study to inspect the air intakes after an experience like that!!

As far as rods for root runs are concerned, strength wise, you wont beat a 7016 lowhy root.
6010/7010 and 8010 cellulosic rods are all well and good as far as all the videos doing the rounds on youtube of cross country low pressure pipelines are concerned, when low pressures are involved and speed is a concern.
But when ultimate joint strength is concerned a 7016 root cant be beaten, except by a Tig root.
Yes an 8010 rod may have a higher tensile strength steel core, but the high hydrogen flux is a downside.
Wont find any structural steelwork calling for 6010 or 6011 use, will be lowhy and iron powders all the way.

6010s arent used on structural work because the best results are obtained if the weld is kept "hot". You will have heard of hot pass, practical on pipework but not on a structural joint.
Otherwise I agree that all else being equal 7016s are ideal for rooting and I would never consider 6010s for anything other than pipe. However, its not totally wrong.

Yeah appreciate that strength isnt the only requirement, and do stand corrected where needs be. Ive always found them to be easier to weld with than different flavours of 6013s due to having such a clear difference between the molten pool and the slag behind. Probably to the point where a little biase comes into play lol.
Cellulosic rods definitely have there uses yes i dont dispute that at all and wasnt saying one way or another is right or wrong, i just personally dont like using them lol

The fast freeze nature makes them the most "practical" rod for pipe roots and in some cases all the way to capping. While a low hydrogen has a higher tensile strength than the cel it would take sooooooo much longer to produce the root which would bottle neck the filling and capping processes behind. Getting the job done to the accepted standard is key on a pipe line. V up rooting with a 7016 isn't the most practical way if a cell produces the standard. The Lincoln stt is still probably the fastest solid Mig root widely accepted and used in pipe roots all over the world. It's not the strongest joint with the access to so many fcaw wires and ceramics but if it doesn't need to be then it's by far the most practical.
