I too use 40mm to dust whin stone, get 20 ton drops and whack it in, makes a good solid base if you put a 6 inch layer down.

Id go tarmac too but its cost prohibitive.

Crushed coarse chipping from the quarry here, the lumps are about 1/2 - 1" across on averge and every few years we top it up as I steal it to go in handmixed concrete as aggregate. It stands up to occasional heavy traffic provided the substrate is solid and you can sort bits out with a rake, provided its mashed in and not too thick its ok for handballing a trailer round on. However its a nightmare to jack up and work on unless you use lots of spreader boards and stuff to lie on & if you drop a fastener its gone forever. And you have to weed it a few times a year but hey thats why I have small slaves, sorry, I mean children. I have to pay them too (pocket money) but a good job they've not heard of the minimum wage yet.
Wouldnt polished concrete be slippy when it gets a bit of nature trying to grow on it? moss etc? I machine float polished a patio in the garden as a trial run for the house and it looked nice but its like a skating rink in the wet and leaves on it are lethal. I've never done polished pattern printed concrete, maybe thats better.

if you are using readymix you can ask them to put coulered dye in it but it is fairly expencive i just went with concrete

Father in law has just decided to have patterned concrete down on his drive, it's on quite a slope and I think he's making a mistake personally. All the ones I've seen have been quite slippy even when on the flat.

The ones I've seen/ stepped on have been OK in the dry but seemed a bit "greasy" almost in the wet. Wouldn't like that on any sort of slope myself but the father in law has his own ideas so I left him to it. The worst part about it is the company he went with were ones who came round and knocked on his door touting for business.

i may just go with concrete then u can get a resin sealer with a non slip addititive too

If you give it what we used to call( when we did contract work for the Anglia water Authority ) a 'tamped finish with an arris edge' it's non slip and looks nice IMHO......

Have you seen the price of that stuff recently? The cost of polished dyed concrete with a pink granite finish and giant mariners compass inlaid mid drive will pale in comparison

ok, yes if you glaze concrete with resin sealer to stay "pretty" someone will be in a plaster cast sooner or later, one very good answer is resin coat and whilst wet brush on carborundam (?) grit,this gives a non slip surface.suggest a little test area first to see if you like/got the hang of it. Now whats this working on cars outside, and a new drive.

Using male logic this means your garage just isnt big enough, a man should never have to work outside.

Leave the drive and quadruple the size of your garage.

well the car port is 6m long the garage is 10m long i dearnt put doors on the front of the car port for fear of getting the council around!

What about concrete with exposed aggregate ? IE. The top layer of pebbles in the mix is exposed with a soft broom and water spray after it has started to harden ? Not sure of the exact term for it tho .
