Drum Incinerator

Let's face it this hardly deserves to be a "project" but why not?

I was thinking to cut the top and bottom out to use as "fire decks". Would probably bend with the heat but I could put studding across instead of support bolts. What do we think?

Will it bend, it all depends on what you intend to burn and how hot it gets. Ive done something similar with a 200l drum but have two peices of 20mm bar welded across the inside to support the cut out top.

I have also added a ring of 20mm holes just above this around the circumference of the drum to improve air in to the base of the fire

They're only thin plate. They'll likely warp.

for a stand id use angle iron and make a seat frame so barrel sits in it yet keeps it off the floor with 4 legs

whilst either will burn some greenery its not a lover of it and certainly not burning conifers in the smaller 14" wide one and yes i have done so



the last pic im sat on extension ladders so the flame is really high and its red hot near it

Putting a lid on it when not in use may make it last a bit longer .

id have done a circle with angle iron

but that would do as its only a height keeper and will allow plenty of air under it

2,1/2" too 3" higher is better once you get a good bed of coals

Why all this complexification…

drum, two rings of chipping hammer holes round the bottom at abot 7 cm and 20cm. Leave the lid you cut out lying in the bottom. Put rubbish-in, bit of diesel, and light by whatever means you chose. I use a wood fire lighter pushed in one of the holes.

if too full of ash empty out, if burns through empty and scrap!

When my daughter moved house, the previous owner had been a ninety year old man who was pretty much housebound. He had employed a gardener to keep the extensive garden tidy & the hedges trimmed.
Having moved in my daughter discovered the lazy gardener had only trimmed the hedges & the over a period of years created a huge pile.
She approached a local clear up firm to remove the huge pile of cuttings. The firm wouldn’t touch it was because it was so far from the road. In passing, casually one of the clean up crew said he would use an oil drum to burn it. Best free advice ever.
Daughter found a local food firm who sold her 4 barrels for £40. A few cuts with the Angle grinder to let air in & we were in business. As described above the drums rapidly burnt the trimmings with very little smoke, best £40 shes ever spent. RonA

i lent mine out after one burn to help them get rid of some stuff just to proove it was quick and fast burning

so lent to neighbours to help them out showed them how to start it they did one good burn and loved it asked for it longer had another burn in it stated it was quick and fats to burn they had a week with a tree shredder the burner burnt and got rid of more

did i get it back nope i did get a new incinerator bin delivered to the door from them though

all ive done is choped the bottem off

then its been used twice the third time was by another crew and its been bashed to hell on the top someones gonna get some grief about it soon

3 or 4 bricks to stand the drum on angle grinder to cut some air holes/slots in the side, 6 x 1/2" holes in the bottom to drain any water out + let some air in.....then burn....sorted

I just drilled a ring of 20mm holes around the base of a 200L drum a few inches up.
Using a step drill is much better and safer than a twist drill.
I also use a washing machine drum but it's too small really.

Decided to go with this design I found on the net. 51 & 64mm hole saws the nearest I could lay my hands on:

Got the 8 64mm top holes drilled, equispaced. Really annoying there's 11 holes lower down. There's no way they're going to "line up" in any way shape or form to the 8.....

I've a sheet of rusting, diamond pattern reinforcing mesh which will hopefully do for the grid. That and some long M10 black bolts for the grid legs.

now drill another set of holes just above the first ridge

and put them inbetween the higher ones

the bottom row will soon fill up with ash on a long burn

Well I got a good tan and reduced the pile. Out of respect to the neighbours I held off burning the conifers! Did torch a mass of one neighbours ground ivy. Made enough smoke as it was...

Got the paint off at least!

The grid I knocked up from diamond reinforcing mesh, bent like a banana under the heat!
