45 gallon drum:
Fill with water (safety)
Plasma cut top off
Tip out water
Plasma cut a few holes in the bottom and sides
Place on three bricks
Light whatever you will with a Rottenburger propane torch through side holes

Works a charm.
Remember to empty ash out regularly ot drum will rot as it gets wet.

I was after making a lower one that I could place over a stump. As smokeless as possible.

Light it at the top so that it burns downwards. It'll minimise smoke.

Take lid off with a cold chisel, takes about 5 minutes. bang a ring of holes or two with a chipping hammer……big hole to light it, if thats your thing. I just use a bit of straw or paper and a fire lighter…

Indeed but I'm particularly looking to burn as smokeless as possible i.e creating a secondary burn of the the smoke. I'm just about to take out an old washing machine so may look to salvage the drum. Then perhaps wrap an ordinary 50gal drum skin around that.

I have a friend who prefers both the top and bottom to be cut off and just place the resulting tube on three bricks letting the burn be on the ground. I think that this is potentially messy, but then I’m burning in a farm yard and he’s doing it in his woods.

Is the secondary burn system a success or a waste of time ?Serious question. I've seen them made with 2 x45g drums with one inside the other .I want as little smoke as possible so as not to annoy the neighbours .

That's allot of water to waste when done, I just use a cold chisel to take the top off.
After that is done, you can go at it for the rest of the cut's with a plasma or torch.

@gaz1 d'you reckon that smokeless burn barrel (above) would work if it was half height?

ive tried it with a smallgas bottle and it tends to hate the burning though it burns hot it prefers burning just wood though ive tried brning connifers and other stuff

ive also burnt off paint on sheets of steel as well
