Dust extraction.

Going to be buying a dust extractor soon, and was wondering what's good and whats best avoided.

I was looking at this one which matches my cabinet. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sand-Blas...864?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item487691f770 I have a SBC 350 blast cabinet from the same seller.

I was also looking at this one but doing away with the bag and just discharging the dust outside the workshop using a 4" hose or something.

Out of the above two is there any better than the other, I'm actually favouring the top one as it bolts directly onto my blast cabinet and would be easier to use but not too sure how affective it would be.

Don't discharge the dust into the air if you have neighbours or it will be blowing over crops. The dust is toxic if you are blasting paint &c.

I use the Clarke one with extra bags and it is very efficient.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I'm interested in your setup rbtcomp. Do you have any diagrams or pics showing the whole system? I use a wood dust extractor and it works well but the bag clogs up quite quickly.
I'm looking to improve it eventually.

This may be of some use for you Thien Baffle I made one last year when I was doing a lot of sanding.
Really noticed a difference after making one, the filter in the industrial vacuum I was using didn't need cleaning as regularly

I only have those photos in the album. Basically I've used toilet pan connectors to connect 110mm plastic underground pipe to the extractor unit and then branch pipes to connect to 4 filter bags.

I fitted these http://www.screwfix.com/p/floplast-screwed-access-cap/72385 in the bottom of the bags to facilitate emptying the dust.

when we where preping the mazdas for goodwood festival the shot blaster was on virtually constantly and the dust was incredible so i got acouple of 205 ltr drums welded a 4" pipe in at a tangent stuck another pipe into the centre of the drum about 3/400mm to make a cyclone, I made two but only connected one I used the exhaust extraction fan to power it and with the blaster working flat out there was no dust blowing out of the outlet all the dust stayed in the drum. the plan was to have a series of them but time was against us but as it was one worked fine i think two would be ample.

The cyclone idea looks interesting and I didn't realise they can work so well so its now on the to do list. I remember my brother telling me ages ago that James Dyson didn't invent the cyclone vacuum. The idea was out there in use on "Guyson" sand blasting equipment long before he used it and patented it.

We use the Clark one but with a cyclone in series, made out of a 45\205 plastic drum, works well we found with soda it was almost imposable to keep filters free without, Soda is not the clean material you are led to think

The best drums to use are the clamp on lid type because they are easier to empty but you can still empty the standard ones through the screw on cap.
In fact some industrial vacuum cleaners use the same principle using a clamp on lid but using 205 drum.
To make the unit work better you can put a drum within the drum to stop a lot of the dust travelling from the inlet to the exhaust and make a cyclone within a cyclone.

I made a massive cyclone for the SWA cable granulation plant I built the cyclone was 12 ft in dia and 20 ft high with an auger screw to feed the plastic granules out the bottom. it was a little bigger than most would have as the fan had a 40hp motor on it
You are better having the cyclone working under a vacuum I had the outlet of the fan blowing though a pumped water screen which dropped the fine dust into the bath .

I've already been using a hoover in my blast cabinet, it dosen't come close to doing the job so was looking for something a bit more powerfull.

I have been using a Record woodworking extractor unit, works well enough for my needs, just the filter bag need cleaning often.

I don't think an ordinary vacuum cleaner can move enough volume of air, that why I used a wood chip extractor. As previously said they work well but the filter bag clogs up.

You need a snail body fan really similiar to the ones for bouncy castle's etc they move air by a centrifuge action .
4" would be fine.

The problem with modern household vacuums is they are limited in power by Europe to 1600 W !! not sure about industrial 'henry's' etc, I know the the industrial one we used at the wood yard had three seperate motors to start, if the plug came out and you plugged it back in it would blow the 13A fuse.

You could get a shop vac and make a rudimental cyclone, basically a glorified catch can. If you go for the one in the link let us know how they work s at that price I think I will be getting one for my cabinet, all the read cabinets seem generic so hopefully their is one for my cabinet.

I just use a small shop vac on mine but as I mostly use AO dust isn't too bad.

I have just acquired an SBC 420 Blast Cabinet with one of these Cyclone extactor units, so once I get it set up and working I`ll let you know how it goes
