the good part is you dont need the rcd at source next to the meter now with it been plastic and insulated they changed the regs on it

Did my 18th in 2018 I think it was hence only having the blue book.
I used to take the pee out of my elderly (to me), mate for not remembering stuff. Now I know where he was coming from, forgotten more than I knew but now I don't care!

There is a lot to remember, most people practicing don't know the regs but worse don't know how to find what they need either.

I got something like 97% through cramming and being able to find things quick. Vowed not to try and remember anything thereafter and just go to the book!

Oh the regs, then I slowly realised nobody else gives a toss about them, at the same time happy to come to me for advice etc. What still pees me off is I had to use my holiday for the 17th course and various 2330 practicals.
I've got the earth plate from a pole mounted 3KV transformer kicking about somewhere. About 1/4" thick solid copper and something like 2 foot square if it's any good to you. We dug it up a few years back and worked out that they'd moved the transformer location sometime in the 1950's by just errecting new poles adjacent to the old then swapped the service over and cut down the old poles. We excavated a base for greenhouses and there it was !

As a bit of background to this my house is pretty old and I've probably checked out only 4 out of the 9 circuits.
SWMBO had the washing machine people out the other day. We have a POS Hotpoint WMD960 on which she has a service contract at about £20 a month. Been nothing but trouble since new and we have them out twice a year. The bloke Friday was saying the 1600rpm spin on this model was its main selling point when new but in reality too much for the bearing assembly in the drum. Consequently we've had a few bearing changes which means splitting the drum and replacing the complete back half which is plastic.
It's a big job, one time the engineer had to borrow my grinder, another time he was short on I think M8 bolts which I supplied.
This time the guy took one look and said he needed to do an electrical test. Plugged in something with pass/fail lights, not much more than a socket 'n see and said "I can't do anything as the reading is over 200 Ohms" and promptly left.
Sod's Law my MFT batteries were dead. Something didn't seem quite right. This is the form he left:
Correct me if I'm wrong but it's Ohms not "ohms". Then, the install does have RCD protection! I reckon he just didn't want to do it.
He said it's over "200" but his writing is illegible in part, "less than 2??". No idea what that means.
Where do they get 2 ohms from as well?
Bottom line is I don't think they wanted to do the job. I've told SWMBO to cancel the contract and put the £240 pa towards a new machine every couple of years.
Of course she "likes" the bloody thing. I can get the half drum kit for around the £100 mark.
As it stands, with the rod work, I'm measuring around 7 or 8A pfc. So that's what 28 to 32 Ohms.
Cheeky b'stards sent an email too saying how they were glad to have been able to fix the machine!

I've never used one, but I think JW did a test on these a while back, which might offer you an alternative option worth looking in to, especially when using it with the conducrete conductive concrete.

If I was to go the "plate" route then I'm wondering:
1) Horizontal or vertical in the ground?
2) How to join the earth wire from the main earth terminal in the cu, to the plate; soldered, crimped lug with brass or copper nuts and bolts?
3) Do I locally paint over this wire to plate connection?
4) Long term viability of that joint and the inability to periodically check if it's buried.
5) Maybe have a copper rod welded to the plate, coming out of the ground like a normal electrode?
6) Whether to use a couple of bags of conductive cement.
Thinking dig the hole first and see how far down the chalk layer is.

Plus a borehole too!
My house lies at the bottom of a valley on the line of a seasonal water course. Luckily we're slightly up slope so as to avoid flooding. Either side of me, about 100m are historic bore holes. Draw a straight line and it passes through my garden pretty much.
If money were no object I'd drill one!
You could until a short while ago go on the BGS site and view boreholes in your area. I think too you're supposed register new ones. Just got on the site and there's something about them having retired the interactive map due to "application upgrades"
