And you need to produce bad welds.......why......?

I'm not sure why learning this will help you in the industry I mean we all started trying not to produce welds with defects but its gunna happen somewhere and its how you deal with the situation. But if your a student how will this benefit your learning process. I am self taught so never did the college route but should u not try to produce welds with out defect?

Good point, this is the whole reason for training, "NOT" to produce bad welds, if you learn how to weld badly, how do you expect to be able how to learn how to weld properly.

Is this is plain mild steel or high carbon steel.(This is prone to cracking if the correct procedure is not followed)

low carbon steel...i am welding two sheets (plates) of 10 mm thickness.....lap joints i will use

Pick an electrode that will run only run on one polarity and use the other! Lots of long arcing, push the puddle, cheap crap 6013 will help you out here. Problem with this is there is plenty of defects you can get in a weld. Why not just produce a bullet proof weld and say this is how it should look like, anything else is garbage.

I have been asked in the past to do welds with porosity and cracks etc, it was for a NDT company to test on, I failed miserably, not sure whether that is a good or bad thing.

I think this is a waste of material personally if you want to weld badbuy some rusted to the core s*** steel get some old damp rods chuck them round the work shop then try and weld ul get ur results every time. If they teach this in college I found out how to do this with out special training

I guess that some who have replied have never done a welding technology course, when I did it many years ago and later on also taught one of the modules, deliberately producing welds with defects and then carrying out various types of both destructive and non destructive testing was part of the syllabus, the best way to study the effects of poor set up poor technique etc is to do it under controlled conditions, log your parameters and relate them to the results.

some1 told me to put oil on welding surfaces....what was that oil??

To deliberately cause porosity, I would run an electrode at way above its intended current, this will overheat it, the rod will glow red hot, flux will overheat and probably crack and fall off, slag will boil and lose its protective qualities. this will also give excessive spatter and undercut
You could introduce a contaminant, material and / or electrodes soaked in water or oil or using a nicely rusted coupon may do it, it depends on what you are trying to prove, (or disprove)

Longer arc, and you don't want to chip off all the way round, just here and there, wetting the rods will cause embrittlement through hydrogen too...
