Who else? Gordon Clown sold off Westinghouse a while ago. They were determined to do away with nuclear power.
Just been talking to a chap who worked at BNFL. Apparently Blair in 2005 was pushing for nuclear power but Gordon Brown was a loggerheads with him. As a result they decided to break up the whole nuclear industry which had been government owned for many years. As a result Britain lost most of it's nuclear capability.

Just seen some incredible figures. The strike price for Hinkley C was agreed at £92.50 per mw/h. The actual cost for construction AND running it is only £11 per mw/h. The rest of the cost is the financing. So if UK governments would man up and actually build our own nuclear powerstations we would have incredibly cheap electricity for ever more!

It's just that someone else pointed out the huge debts that EDF have, despite earning an absolute fortune.
Hardly confidence inspiring.

Are EDF's losses similar to the Royal Mail? They pay out huge dividends and bonuses and then come cap in hand saying "Look, we've made a loss?"

Along those kinda lines, yeah.
So many of the energy and other public utility sector stuff is very profitable for the supplier.
The problem is that whether we like it or not (directly or indirectly), the vast sums come out of the Taxpayers pocket.
I know there are those (often those who operate IN these sectors) insist otherwise regarding equipment & systems that they stand o their own merits/2 feet financially..... but without funding by us - it doesn't look like it to me.

Rolls Royce are really starting to ramp up the SMRs now - and there are more and more companies investing in fusion. One thing it will certainly mean are lots of good quality engineering jobs. RR alone say they will need 40,000. I reckon there will be quite a few people on this forum who will benefit. Especially welders!
My Holbrook is ex Rolls Royce - I wonder if they will ask me to make some parts for them? Trouble is the waiting time will be longer than the half life

Gordon Brown sold off all our nuclear capacity which had been state owned up until then. Successive governments have also shunned nuclear power. Until too late Boris gace RR the go ahead with SMRs but they wont be ready until 2030.

I think going 6 billion over budget might have eaten away at a good chunk of that percentage - but those figures show that construction, operating and maintenance costs are a 3 fold increase on the £11 quoted.
