I had a look at the area website. Very interesting place and has the necessary infrastructure all around it so a good place to use hydrogen as a power source.

who's decided how much renewable generation we'll have to know when it is or isn't enough?

if we need X number of wind turbines, Y number of solar panels and Z of other generation to cover us most of the time.... why not just install more? twice that much? three times that much?

I'm under the assumption were still sat on a load of coal? Fire those back up. If the other country's start to pissnmoan about pollution then they should sell us the energy cheaper.
China have been doing it for years with our waste. We'll have a law that prevents us from doing something. China will buy it dirt cheap and sell us the processed materials back at extortionate cost as it's legal in that country. There's some right dodgy loopholes going on in that import export carry on.

Too expensive to extract and too dangerous. I knew several chaps at Tower Colliery. Owned by the miners. They had to give it up in the end.
There is still one mine going in Glynneath with reasonable reserves but they are few and far between.

Use “other sources”, National inter connectors (France, Norway, Holland) fossil fuels, nuclear and anything else included - but the other 40 odd weeks a year you make the most of the wind/sun when you can.

Again it’s not a case of “one thing is going to provide everything”, rather about maximising what you can do. That’s my understanding of the intentions of things going forward - so from a low percentage of renewables 30 years ago to 40 odd % now to a higher percentage in the future.

In time I'm sure that one of the parts of the solution will be to use excess renewable electrical generation to produce cheap hydrogen and then store that for use much as many countries already do with natural gas.

Lack of investment due to this and a backlog of maintenance during covid has meant quite a few reactor shut downs when they need it the most. More political meddling. As a result they are keeping all their electric. We shouldn't have to rely on other countries for our capacity.

The last operating deep coal mine in the United Kingdom, Kellingley colliery in North Yorkshire, closed in December 2015.

The rest if still open are open cast mines.

Not sure on that one.
Germany is burning loads of dirty brown coal at the moment. They despise nuclear but don't care how much CO2 and other crap they are pumping out.
Wind isn't doing very well here tonight. I know it is just one day but seriously we can have 2 weeks like this.

Again, that’s just taking an argument to an extreme to prove a point. No one is “relying” on anyone for capacity, it’s all part of an integrated system. One in which we export quite a bit the other way when we have spare capacity.

An area of high pressure can sit over the whole of Europe for a week or more. Then there is zero wind anywhere.
But never mind - let's all rely on France's abundant nuclear power instead!

The heating engineer came around to fix the auger on my biomass boiler today. We got chatting about solar and wind power. He's got a 4kW wind turbine and lives another 200m higher than me so should pay almost nothing for electricity.

No way he said, why said I, Electric Aga said he. Somewhere between 220 and 270kWh per week it needs, and he still has a boiler going, so doesn't heat his whole house. It sounded like he had no choice in the matter and would happily junk it if he could.

Hopefully the high prices will curtail a lot of this stupidity. It's much easier to save power than it is to generate it

My oil AGA costs about £30 a week to run and I love it. Haven't turned the central heating on yet and it has been down to 3C most nights. Wood burner the other end of the house keeps the other part warm.
