I leave mine for a few days. There's no an awful lot of gas. The water will get yucky. And turn off the power before putting your hand in. It feels really weird.
Once the rust is gone it doesn't do anything more to the workpiece.
I would suggest you use gloves for handling the items.
A good way of cleaning the muck off the items is a pressure washer.
What sort of voltage and current are you using and what's the surface area of the piece?

all i can seem to find is either galvy, stainless or ali.
nothing just plain mild steel.
thought of a wire coat hanger. but im sure that is coated in something.

well if it doesn't make any difference in what you use.
i have some thickish copper wire and proberly some metal coat hangers.
