Elliot progress No. 1

I just got a hold of a nice little progress drill of a chap who bought all the machinery out of a brass works in Dublin. Its been poorly painted at sometime plus its recently been out in the rain as inside is full of water. Couldn't wait to get stuck in so I've started stripping it down already.
Does anyone have any recommendations of somewhere I could buy a manual or parts list?

Your camera is your best friend until you can track down the manual etc.

This pulley is broken which presumably from someone trying to remove it. This I why I need a manual or parts list. I don't know what is holding things together.

The table is in great shape just 2 small peck marks.

The original motor is 1/2 horse 3 phase but I found one exactly the same size 1/4 horse single phase just need to give it a clean out and test.

Thanks. Do you know what the quality of those manuals are like?
I'm asking because I've bought copies of farm machinery manuals in the past and the diagrams are very poor and hard to make out.

What are you likely to be drilling? If >12mm and/or hole saws etc then 1/4 horse is a bit weeny; if just <12mm then it will probably be fine.

I may be using holesaws occasionally. Would you recommend replacing with a another 1/2 horse motor or bigger?

1/2 horse minimum.

I've got a reduction geared 1/2 horse waiting to go onto a Fobco. Did a similar conversion to dads old Jones & Shipman. It allows you to make best use of all the steps on the pulleys and makes hole sawing a doddle...

Nice welcome to the old drill club, we have two a Statute and a Fobco both excellent as is yours, much better than the newer imported stuff.
Motor go for the bigger one

Yes. He has some incredible good older stuff. Another 2 smaller drills both meddings, an avery hardness tester which is on Gumtree now. He also had a very large metal cutting vertical bandsaw with blade welder and grinder in brilliant condition. A very nice lathe, can't remember the make but is in good shape.

Everything in the drill is covered in brass swarf. According to the guy I bought it from it came out of brass works in Dublin. Hopefully that means it wasn't heavy use.

There's not that much to them so should be fine. Just be careful with the return spring if it needs adjusting or sorting, can break easy.

I did a little thread on my restore but no real detail on how things go together but might be a little helpful. They are a lovely old drill so good choice.

Convert the original motor to dual voltage if you feel able to do so(there are several threads about doing it on here), then wait for a cheap 240v inverter to show up on ebay; low power ones can often be got for beer money.

Interesting, I'm going to be in the same boat shortly. Do you reckon if I can source a 1hp motor I should go with that?

1hp single phase might be a bit heavy for the motor mount. Might make adjusting the belt or lifting/lowering the head a bit of a pain. 3/4hp would probably work fine though.
I'm sure I saw an old American article online somewhere on reducing the speed of a bench drill. I'll have a Google later and see if I can turn it up again...

I'm doing one at the moment, they are pretty easy to work on really. I was after a manual but seeing as they wanted £25 I didn't bother.

I wouldn't have minded a couple of quid for a PDF version perhaps but I think that's a bit steep to be honest.

As above, take plenty of pics and make sketches as it comes apart and you won't go far wrong. If your stuck I can try and help out, though I ignored most of my good advice and didn't actually take that many pics when I was stripping it

If it's who I think, I've emailed them twice asking for help and never heard anything back. They've a good selection of spare parts but a little service goes a long way in persuading me to open my wallet..
