Thanks for the tips so far. Think I've got a manual sorted. Some parts arrived today for another project I'm working on so won't be working at the drill for a couple of days. When I get back to it I'll report back here.

I took the pulley assembly out of the spindle housing to check the bearings. The bearings feel tight enough but they do seem a wee bit gravelly. Im not sure how to disassemble it so I thought I'd ask. I took off a circuit off the shaft under the bottom bearing but can't work out how to remove the bearings.

Got new bearings for the spindle. Was able to get some new old stock, one made in England and one Swiss made, can't remember the makes. The thrust bearing was fine so it's back on. Decided to leave the 2 bearings on the pulley as they feel ok.

The pinion to lift and lower the quill has been repaired in the past. It looks like the gear has had the teeth milled of and built up again and re machined.

The built up metal must be soft as it is badly worn. Also there are some worrying cracks at the bottom of some of the teeth.

Would this be an expensive item to have made?

If you zoom in on the second pic you can just about see the cracks at the bottom of the tooth.

I think the first question to ask is does it work okay and without any discernible play/noise that indicates an impending failure? If not then just leave it. Having things machined will always be expensive unless you can make it yourself.

I wish I had the machinery to do it myself. I have to say I didn't actually use the drill before I stripped it down. Will put the quill back in and see how it feels before everything goes into the electrolysis tank tomorrow night.

Hope you got your machine back together all fine! I have one too that I'm doing some repairs on; did you have much difficulty getting the chuck off, and does yours have a morse taper on the spindle?

Unfortunately it's still in bits work and other commitments have meant that spare time to work on stuff is very limited. I got everything taped

up ready for painting and hid it in the spare bedroom to stop it going rusty. Just need a free Sunday to do some spraying.

I looked at his lathe rebuild when i got mine glad i only gave it a clean.

I had a go at reapplying filler to my Fobco, big mistake, Christmas came early in the workshop, white dust everywhere. Like most things I set out to restore it goes well up until the point that it's almost usable, then I need it for a job, it goes back together and lives mechanically fine but a patchwork of different paint!

Standard high gloss metal enamel paint I would imagine

if you're not getting back to it for a good while, I'd suggest that you don't leave masking tape on for too long, seems to dry out and takes forever to get off in about 10000 bits.. at least that's my experience

Depends if you shell out for good stuff or not. That white crap you get at DIY shops is terrible in every aspect, I've had it delaminate the paper from the glue before from the solvents in the enamel. I use this blue or yellow automotive stuff now, it can stay on for ages too.

The 3M blue 'low tack' stuff is good , I use it for masking off when polishing the car paintwork etc - or like here when I wet-sanded the headlights

Doesn't half feel awful taking sandpaper to headlamps eh? Seeing them reappear as the grades go up is fun though.
