All this scaremongering keeps the old folk warm with rage, since they took the winter fuel money!

where there is 3 tiers of tariffs

I have a tariff where the prices change daily based on wholesale energy prices, which for the past couple of years have been a hell of a lot cheaper than any bog standard fixed tariff.
A close friend has an EV specific tariff where he gets much cheaper (I believe it to be 5p per kWh) during certain time periods throughout the day.
A handful of times this year my energy supplier has offered free electricity for specific periods of time (might only be 30 minutes, or up to a couple of hours) when the grid has an excess they need to dispose of.

None of the above would be possible with monthly meter readings.

as above reference gives you the data collection reference and like the info i have being saying for long enough on this forum

there isnt 30 million meters on buisness as it does quote 2.6 million being business so that clearly references household energy meters

as like the above its being kept well hidden and it takes some finding

i quoted the business amount for reference but dont put it past them not to install it on consumer bills like they do with business

so if i was to say your going to pay between 220.00 to 500.00 extra a year on your bills and thats for all meters

An extra £500 a year would more than double my current electricity bill. For that very reason I doubt it would ever happen.
I’d buy a generator and some solar panels, and produce my own power.

theres only one thing i cant prove that dcda collected data for the common householder is to be payed for as the system isnt geared up for that system at the moment however it is there via the business side of it

when enough of these smart meters are fitted more than lickely it will be aimed at the common householder we all know the energy companies arnt going to pay for that data to be collected but the customer will be made to pay for that data to be collected

i also find it unfair that those with direct debit payments get better tariffs than those that pay upfront ( prepayent meter ) when everyone should get the same benefits of the tariffs

Lady friend of mine was moaning a while back because she had £3k credit with British Gas.

I asked her why, for the love of god, hadn’t she cut off the direct debit, or called them, or swapped suppliers, or anything really. She’s not the smartest cookie though, so I’ve never had a proper answer to her idiocy.
They walk amongst us.

and isnt that the one thing that this post is all about, there is no proof about the cost to the domestic user, so you're just making it up and scaremongering. I'll worry about it when it happens.

The vast majority of people with smart meters are already on half hourly readings, as far as I know no one pays for this. I don’t.

Different for business users I guess, but there’s lots of different rules and charges that apply to them.

However, if before you get all paniced from the scaremongering, do some more reading. As a business user being charged for data collection, you can pick your own data collection and handling agents - you don't have to accept the default agent from the supplier. If it does end up applying to domestic use, then you will more than likely be able to do the same.

Is this going to be like credit reference agencies. Collecting and analysing our data so we can't get cheap loans etc?

You could stick the tin foil hat over the meter to stop it transmitting the data. Surly you cant be charged for data collection if they can collect it

My FIL was chuntering about having to pay £1.50 to get a paper gas bill.

Because there is a whole lot less work in taking payments from direct debit than anything else.

If you don't work for free, why should anyone else?

Never had an issue with direct debits themselves in 30 plus years I've used them. Seeing as they've been going since the 60's, there's remarkably little in the news about how bad they are. My mum refused to use them as she once read an article in the 1980's that said one person once maybe had a problem . . .

I live on the edge of one of the UK's largest cities, and the smart meter only intermittently works here.

They have not been particularly effectively or robustly implemented.

My understanding is there is a north south divide in smart meters…south work on the cell network, north apparently on some radio system.

Just another big push Government scheme delivered in a 1/2 R.sed way!
