Never had an issue with direct debits themselves in 30 plus years I've used them. Seeing as they've been going since the 60's, there's remarkably little in the news about how bad they are. My mum refused to use them as she once read an article in the 1980's that said one person once maybe had a problem . . .

i have the very first time i had used DD car insurance they took out a payment to them early before the agreed date that cost me not one bank charges but 2 as they tried twice to take the money that wasnt there for them and that was 50.00 in bank charges at halifax

as ive said already those that are on prepayment meters should have equal rights to the same benefits of those cheaper tariffs as those that pay DD as they have to pay upfront for there electric usage

and isnt that the one thing that this post is all about, there is no proof about the cost to the domestic user, so you're just making it up and scaremongering. I'll worry about it when it happens.

because none of them are talking about it as much as its well hidden

or that it will be coming into force on a certain date

you might call it scaremongering but this thread alone has stated options as stated you can choose another dcda agent if you want cheaper fees

with the tariffs alone on smart meter

its night time tariff ( economy 7 times)
day time tariff
peak time tarifff thats the interesting one you pay way more early morning and evenings at peak consumption the golden hrs of getting up going to work and coming home for tea
sooner or later you will get an evening tariff thats speculation though

If you think the DD was taken incorrectly then talk to the bank. They will refund it, and if it was a mistake that cost you bank charges those will be refunded too.

just to be clear i have a mandatory enforcement letter to fit a smart meter within the property as ive refused them fitting a new smart meter and refuse to speak about it

so everyone thats on a normal meter will be forced up to the new smart meter

end of life of the meter so we need to replace it ...

i know mine is old but you have to check your meter numbers to find when it was installed or otherwise its a mandatory end of life to fit a new smart meter

from my reading you can request it being forced into dumb mode but there is a but with it this can be changed to a prepayment meter without your knowledge if they deem you as needing to be on a prepayment meter

All nonsense @gaz1 . Meter calibrations last 10 years, meters are expected to last many years more, there is no mandatory enforcement unless the supplier (or you) is querying your reads.
The letter they send out is nonsense.

Wont happen here….they dont work here…I have 3 supplies in my 3 properties. Two were recent new supplies, I was forced to have a smart meter, even though I was told when I tried to get one for my house it wouldn't work. And guess what, they were fitted and the guy seemed surprised that they didn't work. The farm next door, 3 supplies had them fitted, different supplier…theirs dont work either.

I do wonder though why you are so against them…low over night tariffs and batteries are a no brainer if you can get them.

I don't buy into the fear. Electric companies are imperfect and profit driven private companies. If you're trying to tell me that collecting data is more expensive via the internet than via humans in vans, your judgment is questionable.

A company that charges more for data collection online, than manually, sounds pretty uncompetitive.

lets go down the route of its only money comment

everyone should get the same tariffs and not means test them by the payment that you make

you may argue it

as said prepayment meter pay upfront for there energy usage and are penalised by the worst tariffs going

DD payments is payed when the bill comes through whilst the energy you use is estimated for the year, my yearly estimated bill was double

a note has to be said here with dd your either infront with your payments or your level when you argue with the company for the payment back from them and its always payed on the next bill

this is energy usage bias it dosnt matter if you work your using the same energy as the prepayment meter user whilst the prepayment meter pays upfront for there energy therefore should get the same tariffs as the dd payment user

this is also true with the normal meter user instead of being refused any tariffs unless they fit a smart meter as payments can still be made with dd payments

therefore all meter users should have the same tariffs

workers are now going to be penalised as you go into work and when you come home with the new tariffs with the new peak times ( think about it )
lets say the times are 6.30am to 9am and 3pm to 6pm will be the new peak time tariff which is higher than the day time tariff

Shhhh! Don't be giving them ideas. I hit upon a wondrous way of dealing with them at my door or by phone. I mostly live in France now so when I hear "good morning sir" I listen for a mo then start speaking English quickly to ask them what I want, only once did someone say would you prefer me to speak in English. When I am in the UK I occasionally get such calls, I speak French at a good pace and the line usually drops at their end. The other way with door callers is to say, sorry I am renting here, you would have to speak to my landlord and I cannot give out his contact details.

Why shouldnt there be a charge for more work with prepayment meters to deal with all the extra kerfuffle with cards, payments etc? Higher tariff would encourage me to get the billing arrangement changed. If the energy supplier is happy with you as a customer, you can change to a credit meter. I was told prepayment meters are fitted for one main reason. If you aren't the reason, get it changed.

As for direct debits racking up credit - one phone call got my mum's changed from paying a fixed payment all year to simply paying the bill presented - a variable direct debit. (Now admittedly, BG have gone down in my estimation for not being able to work out simple maths after I closed her account).

Took one email with my energy supplier. They have no more of my money than is required to pay my bill for the energy I used. I don't understand why it seems to be so difficult for some to be able to go online and select the option, email or call their supplier. A small amount of time and it's sorted.

You're already paying for your meter readings to be taken, or dealt with when you submit them. It's the smart meter users who need a rebate.

I sit here with the heating off, the windows shut, wearing a thick wooly jumper (and nothing else). Maybe later I'll light the stove. Maybe I won't.

My neighbours one side , in and out all the time, simp,y leave the door open all day.

Other side must have the heating set to 25 deg all day from the continuous plume from the boiler vent.

Or when my ex lived here - heating full chat, windows wide open "because she could if she wanted" ( not when I'm paying the bills she couldn't!)

Prepayment tariffs aren’t allowed to be higher than the normal going rate for electric. They changed it last year, and I took note as my daughter was in a house with a prepayment meter.

Have you ever tried to have a prepayment meter removed as i have

i didnt owe british gas a bill and a prepayment meter was installed in a rented home ( ex council )

now fair comment i have to get a credit record with them so tried to have the said prepayment meter removed and a normal meter fitted

I was refused that means i was forced to use that meter with no previous bill owed a created credit record with them so unfairly forced to use a prepayment meter with higher tariffs

now you could argue that its a council house ... and that the housing association owns the meter as that comment would be incorrect only the energy company owns the meter not the housing association

theres also another argument to this point with smart meters it used to be go to court for access to the property to change said meter its now changed to the power company can and when they see fit
can change you onto a prepayment meter without your knowledge just by a sent signal

theyve now become judge and jury on how you pay the bill if you dont like it your forced onto a prepayment meter with no recoarse
the bbc has claimed this in 2022 and other sites before that and also within 2023
