Didn't even know you got such a thing. Never had an issue before but I suppose it is the pulse that makes the torch hotter than normal.

Good morning Hood.
I have had my Binzel push pull gun smoking, however this can be cured by a water cooled gun, and yes the pulse does generate more heat in the torch. On the up side you do go longer. 'Francis' had it push pull nozzle smoking, which supprised me, I did do 1meter run on 8mm 5083 so shouldn't complain. 'Francis' now has a water cooled push pull gun for her next bigger alli job.
Just for your info Hood, there is a big difference in the duty cycle of the water cooled Binzel gun as opposed to the air cooled. I basically put through 6.5kg of 1.2 mm 5356 in one day on the water cooled Binzel gun, without any tip issues. As when you need to get it done 'you need to get it done'

I probably don't do enough of the type of work that has long runs to justify a water cooled push pull. That is not saying I wouldn't like on though, just not found anyone giving one away cheap yet
My local supplier called as I was on my way to work today to say my new tig torch was in so I asked about the black diffusers, he has them. Also said he has the white plastic and also the ceramic. Think it may have been the ceramic I normally get and maybe white plastic I got with the torch hence me not normally getting the smoking. I would think anyway that the ceramic ones would be the most heat resistant, could be wrong though, will have to research before I pick up the torch tomorrow.

If he has the ceramic ones go for them, I keep forgetting yours takes MB36 spares as its air cooled, not the same bits the rest of the MB501 water cooled PP guns we use. The ceramic ones will definitely stand up to the heat. If you are using 16 litres of minute at the shroud you can get away with about 15mm of stick out if the area is draught free?

Will do Jim, it has been ceramic ones that I have used before and just assumed the ones I got with the push pull were ceramic also.
I have found that it is best to keep a longish stick out with the pulse, if I get too close I get a bit of crackling.
Finished the first roll of wire today, thought the pull motor would have actually pulled the last 6m out but it didn't, maybe they just don't have enough pressure on the rollers to do so, probably by design.

It probably would pull it out if there was no burr on the end, the motors are reasonably powerful but normally the wire is hooked around a hole in the spool and it wouldn't have the grunt to straighten that out and pull that through. You tight Scotch git lol.

Seriously though I had just thought it would have pulled it through no problem, didn't take much to pull it manually and there wasn't much of a kink in the end of the wire as the rollers in the EWM must have straightened it a bit. Not bothered in the slightest, the £1.20 plus VAT saving by getting a 6Kg reel rather than 12 x 0.5Kg is worth the loss of the 6m Having said that the time changing over the 0.5Kg rolls gave me a wee break, now I just have to keep going

Good morning gents.
In reply to your question Hood, I did buy an EWM Phoneix 330. However absolutely no support from BOC here even with intervention from EWM UK. I threatened I would return the machine, and eventually I did. All EWM equipment from the BOC website here has dissapeared so it is now obvious that BOC were getting out of the welding supply. They have closed the BOC gas and gear which was local to me and it was also on the gas cracking plant site. It also took over 2 months for a refund.
I was going to get a Fronius TPSi 320c however could not believe that this was the only machine capable of doing what I wanted, hence why I went around the traps, asked questions and feed back. However the equipment is only as good as the support and I refused to spend any extra funds on something that was not being supported. No one would ring me back or respond to my questions. The machine (EWM) was delivered with the wrong manual, and with bits missing, unable to be used. It took three weeks to get the missing bits and that I feel only happened due directly to the intervention from EWM UK.
I now have a Fronius TPSi320c 'Francis' is her name and she is very complient and doesn't yell at me to come home. The gent I got the machine from has been very helpful answering questions and helping with setup issues, which is what I wanted in the first place. Base setting is what I was after the rest I can fiddle to get what I want. So far alli is under control and the finish I am getting is what I wanted and to those that may question, the weld and setting were tested sectioned and macro checked, so I know they are good. I have been doing the same for steel, but time short due to jobs, will continue when not so time short.
Just a final note about the EWM. The machine was good no problems and it did a few cracking welds, however most of the time I had it, it was just being used on samples to get used to it and get some baseline settings for different positions and material thicknesses. One job I did was to repair a 5"stainless steel exhaust bellows. The S/S bellow material had cracked next to the mounting flange allowing the exhaust gas to escape. So welded it with (I know it is not the correct way ) .9 steel wire. .6mm S/S to 12mm steel flange using .9mm steel wire on Ar 93% 5%Co2 2%O2 gas. It look like it had been done with a tig, even the customer commented as to the finish

Henry that was a shame, you would and should have got the support required. BOC here has also shut down their local Gas and Gear depot and now it is just franchises for the gas. Good to hear that EWM UK at least tried to get you sorted but as you say it looks like BOC were getting out of the game so were not interested.
I have only used mine for Alu so far, will at some stage try out stainless as I got 3 rolls of flux core for free so all I will need is the gas, it will be a while though before I try it as I am too busy with the fitting out of the new boats.
Good that you are getting on with the Fronius though, it will be a lovely machine I am sure.

Your letter just proves what is always being said on here to someone looking for kit, work out what type of machine/plant you need fit for purpose,then find local supplier who will give you good service/back up.
The good bit out of the bad service you got was that it was EWM England that helped you out.Glad everything got sorted in the end,but it obviously put you through the hoops to get it sorted.

Good morning arther. Yes it did get resolved in the end and yes again it was a shame it worked out the way it did. 'Francis' did cost me three times what the Phomeix 330 had, however the up side I got to try two top end machines and their accessories. I never got to try the EWM on alli as never got the push pull gun for it. I found that the EWM's PC2 torch was more cumbersom and stiffer to use than the Fronius push gun, also the PC2 torch was very short at 3.5m. All I can say at the moment is I am quite happy with 'Francis' regardless of cost with her performance and to make me look good and I hope she continues to do so

I did wonder about that as mine is a 330 but I reckon it must be 10years or more old, Jim should be able to confirm.

At the end of the day a machine is only as good as its backup, unfortunately in your part of the world, the backup fell through and let what i'm sure would have been a excellent machine down. If you can get the technical backup and service with another brand, then thats what you have to do. I had it in my head that EWM weren't really that big in Oz and Kemppi & Fronius were the main leaders?

Good morning Brad93. To be honest there is a multitude of machines available here. Esab, Miller, Lincon, CIG weld apart from the Chinese, Italian and no 'name brands'. Who actually has market share, don't know as the industry is so fragmented and every suppler that you speak to says there machine is the best. So in reality some one is lying. I think BOC started with EWM in about 2010 with a big push in one of the annual trade shows, but at that stage I wasn't interested, so just thought 'another welding machine for the market'. CIG weld has been flogging Lorch rebranded stuff here for some years. I found out all this info when started looking early last year, what is available here and it was quite supprising.
I absolutely agree that the EWM would have been excellent, as with most things from Germany, but the support, attitude and customer service was non existent.
I had a day out with the Kemppi crew, which was lunch and a day telling all that attended how good they and there machine are, but at the end of the day it came down to the demo. The demo guy did a poor job of the samples he had and in the positions that I requested. I had no doubt that the machine is capable of doing as I want, but that is not the point. I was and did buy a machine that I could ring someone and say ' I am doing this position, with this material, with this thickness and wire, where do I start. Or conversly I am having this problem 'what do I change to improve it'. If you come in cold, new material, position, wire and gas, you need a starting point and this is what I wanted.
I struggled with the EWM for more than six months, even with the push from EWM in the UK and it was obvious that there is a limit to what they can do, enough was enough. I made the decision to get the Fronius finally, drove 900km to the guy that answered my question the best and at no stage was pushy for the machine sale. He did the demo which I expected would be good and out of position. Let me tell you I was OK till I paid the bill after the machine was packed and in the truck. I knew what the cost would be, as it was discussed prior to me travelling there, but I was still physically sick at the sheer expense and the thought that no one else would provide the support that this guy has.
One final note, I am both happy and content with my decision to get 'Francis' as when required she has performed admirably, however there is one still niggling issue, 'faulty operator unit'. I have inquired with Fronius but still no software solution to this yet. They do assure me that they are looking into it though!
