I had to do some repair work to a standby boat that had just been fitted out at Rosyth (I think), it sailed from there, got half way to the rig and had to make for Montrose as a few sections had flooded. I have never seen welding as bad as some of the welds on that. Well I have but not from supposedly professional welders. Some welds were very nice and some were just pathetic. How it passed inspection I will never know.[/QUOTE

heard of a rig recently that was passed off as finished in some foreign land and all the gusset plates on the crane pedestal had only been tacked and had sprung off narrowly missing some workers on a lower deck

Looked like it was the tea lady that had done the welds, in fact I reckon she could probably have done better.

My mate got his elderly Renault through a test by epoxying strips of Formica on the chassis legs, wiggling some bondo on the edges and schutzing the lot.
Same bloke got a Herald through by remaking the chassis outriggers from fluorescent light fittings pop-riveted over the old ones. I don't know that he even bothered painting those.

I remember a few years ago the Italian government, and some others too were considering making working on your car/truck/bike/whatever illegal. You would have had to bring it to certified professionals. When you see pure muck like that in the pictures, you can understand why.
