More likely a burst out through weakened, UV degraded tyre, a cut from a broken spring or similar would be radial, not across the tyre due to rotation...
You can also see cracks between the tread in other parts, indicative of a time-expired tyre. I think the maximum age for an MoT pass is ten years, less on a PSV.

There are currently no MOT rules surrounding tyre age for private passenger vehicles, but tyres over 10 years old at the time of the test will be failed if they are on any front steered axle, or any rear axle of a minibus with a single wheel fitment.


I see some god awfull aged tyres on private cars in my workshop. They will fail if they are perished or split.

not so sure the cords are steel...but
how many times has it bumped a curb in those years....it happens and not a critism....

wifey goes nuts, both my vehicle get new tyres when they get down to 25% or damaged....

It is interesting how the steel cords look clean and seperate to the rubber - that almost suggests to me a manufacturing defect or heat has debonded them.

Just had a reply for a major tyre manufacturer.
They tell me it looks like she has ran over something and combined with the tyre age its failed.
Just tried to buy a set of Continentals for it and no one has any stock!

Mate of mine has a motobility car. Only 2 years old and 12000 miles. At the last service they advised changing all the tyres as they were badly cracked. Continentals. Mate had the same with almost new Michelins - I suspect modern eco products may just have something to do with it

Continental gave me 3 brand new tyres as my 6 year old ones started to crack so I cant complain about them, just cant find any stock of Micheline or conti

Vehicles that go for BIVA, or MSVA, can’t have tyres older than 5 years on. I’m guessing that will move into MOT territory eventually.

The Yamaha Bulldog I bought last year had the original 22 year old tyres on. They looked and felt perfectly okay, dry stored, off the ground, for many years, only 600 miles on them. I did change them though.

Tyres do age - you might not tell in normal road use, but competition and you notice very rapidly, even off-road where deep tread might cause you to think they are fine. I had exactly the same tyres, almost the same tread depth, one pair were 5 yrs old, the other brand new. Night and day grip level off road.

Always used to be said that the total contact patch between you and the road was about the same size as a sheet of A4 . . . it makes no sense at all to skimp on that tiny patch - it's not okay just because you don't go fast, don't corner on the limit - you might need to brake on the limit.

Which doesn't mean I'm happy at the £1000 I'm going to have to spend on four new tyres for my Dodge

I know what you mean, I have been promising myself, my Yeti some Michelin Cross for ages.

My Yeti is still on its originals, but low mileage but can't afford Xs at the moment.

It was interesting I could buy a tyre for £45 or £160 + I do believe you get what you pay for but many brands I have never heard of. The concerning thing is I went on several On line fit at a location type places entered the tyre details and it showed loads of Non commercial tyres, so unless you are aware you could be driving round with car tyres on your van!
