This what you call a failed tyre it was hanging on the side of a trailer for many years, I'm guessing water pooled in the bottom and rusted the steel belt out?, apart from that it's got plenty of tread left.
Can I refer you to the discussion on MOTs not being needed on cars . . . when your average user just doesn't have a clue . . . imagine that on a wet day, behind you, on the motorway . . . or on a wet 30mph, or even 20mph limit road, coming towards your kid crossing on the green man . . .Talking of failed tyres, my son's friend asked if he could leave his car at our place while he's on holiday (live pretty close to airport). I happened to notice the state of his right front tyre.

Worst tyre I've seen in years, passenger side is only marginally better. Think a bit of advice upon his return is required.
Caravan tyres no older than 7 and change at 5yrs recommended.11 years old is quite old for a tyre, I changed all the Surf ones after 9 years as I was getting paranoid about them, they still had 6-7mm of tread though.
BOT ALERTWhen thinking about automotive performance, we often focus on major components like the engine and tires. But it's also important to consider products like Rubber Bellows and EPDM Sponge Seals. These parts protect vital systems from dirt, moisture, and vibration, which helps extend the life of vehicle components, including tires. After all, a well-maintained suspension and sealing system can prevent unnecessary strain on your tires, improving overall vehicle efficiency.

A woman was killed in a BMW Z4 I think when her partner changed a tyre. She was carrying a wheel and tyre on her lap to a garage when it explodedThe spare tyre in the back of my Iveco Daily exploded while unattended. Before this, it had looked fine.
The split was about 8 inches in length with a strip of tyre about 1 1/2 inches wide.
I’m just glad it went while in the van and not on the motorway while on the van.
The tyre wasn’t old but it had been the hottest day we’ve had this year.
Partly but also they had a boot full of luggage. Is that because the idiot designer made the spare spacesaver wheel well too small for the proper road wheel?
Capt Wilcox was holding the car tyre inside the vehicle, because it would not fit in the boot, when it exploded.
It is thought the couple had changed the tyre on the BMW Z3, after noticing a bulge in it, but that Capt Wilcox was holding it because the boot was full of luggage.
Old Age ! Things deteriorate with age .Don't we all. Cars rot ,tyres perish and suffer at the hands of the council pot hole regime. They are your first and last contact with the world stop fretting and change them .Just checked the fronts 2017 last rear is identical to the failed one so will be changed, I don't want to rush out and swap all four but would be happier if I knew why it failed

When did that happen and what was the date code on the tyre? The spare tyre in the back of my Iveco Daily exploded while unattended. Before this, it had looked fine.

Yes, most people would think of doing that in an emergency situation , eh?Darwin award,
Had they deflated the tyre using the valve, it would have been avoided.
