I liked those tools, thought ill treat my self, until i saw the price....ouch.

If you have a mill its possible to make a tangential turning tool, they have been around for many years and I would guess quite easy to find details and drawings to help make one.

Like everything, it is once you know how to do it. A machine the same as that wouldnt be much larger if any than the bantam you were talking about.

It's a lot bigger than the bantam from where I was looking.

Pictures can be decieving, be worth getting some one to run a tape over one for you. Looking at center heights and bed options there not greatly different.

I'm getting there fellas. I'm also learning that the tdi is only useful for some thread pitches. This was a difficult one at 1.25 pitch and after 2 failed attempts on the tdi I did it with reversing the lathe.
Yet a 1mm pitch is perfect using the tdi. I guess it's down to how it lines back up on the lead???
I'm happy mind. That thread looks great to me.

Proof is in sticking an out of the box nut on, does it fit....looks very good surface finish too.. Every machinist has a full scrap bin from getting there.

The tdi normally has a list of the engage points for the different threads, some you can do at every mark others only on specific points.

I keep mine engaged for everythread, find i make less scrap that way.

Next is to go internal......

I don't know if a nut will fit it as I don't have one that size but I'll have a go at a size tomorrow that I have nuts for and turn it down to a proper size. Tonight was all about technique and learning what I can and can't do. My tdi I found works perfect for most threads with a couple of odd ones that not so well.
I'll get the external ones spot on and try some actual sizes out too then internal will be shortly after.
@doubleboost your videos are the best on the net. Others race through it leaving a lot of unanswered questions.

You can make a tangential (diamond) tool holder using your milling attachment for a few pence from scrap, quite a challenge but you'll learn a lot and be so chuffed when it's finished!

Love mine use it for most normal turning jobs.

The back gears are a tad noisy when engaged. They ain't making a clatter but it's quite a bit quieter when they ain't engaged in the higher speeds. Is that normal. They look in really good nick and move nice and free.

They will make a noise they're straight cut gears, try a bit of heavy oil, chainsaw oil doesn't fly off so much. don't forget to oil the splindles they turn on too.

Back gearing is generally noisy as more often than not they are straight cut gears. The change wheels also tend to be straight cut and will also be very noisy. Make sure you don't run them too tightly either, there needs to be a little backlash in the chain. Lastly, you need to use a sticky lubricant, such as motorcycle chain lube ( Doubleboost's preference) or a good molybdenum disulphide open gear grease on them.

As I said the metric threading dial uses a different tooth count gear for different pitches. Should be in the manual if you have one.

Change wheels are as quiet as a mouse and to be fair the back gears are far from annoying they just making a little juddering noise when doing there thing. Sounds normal from what's said so I'll not worry.
Pete I don't have a manual yet but ive been discovering based on what you said about the tdi. It's no big deal as the 1 or 2 threads that don't quite match With its increments should the day come I cut one like today I'll just reverse the lathe. Most of the other pitches work spot on with the dial.
