Female brake flares

If you buy a cheaper brake flarer, they will only be able to make an sae flare. The more expensive tools like Sykes pickavant will have dies to make both. As long as you don’t mix sae and din at the point of joining then you’ll be fine. Although if your using copper or kunifer pipe you’ll read many accounts of people mixing and having no problems due to the flare deforming to fit whatever is screwed onto it. It’s definitely not good practice, both the shape of the flare and the angle of the sealing faces are different so shouldn’t be mixed.

looks like din flare...look at the top of the male thread , its square vs the sae ones are beveled in at the end

A general rule of thumb , if the fitting has a metric thread then its usually a DIN flare, if the thread is imperial then a SAE flare . You may well struggle with some cheap flaring tools ( and expensive ) to produce a decent flare in steel pipe , even the SP Flaremaster

Hi all,

In the past when connecting two lengths of brake pipe together I've used male fittings (all metric/DIN by the way) on the ends of my lines, and joined with a double female fitting. It works if a little bulky.




Anyway, in a pack of parts I bought a while back, there are single female fittings. They match what came off of my car. You fit it to one line with a double flare, or a female flare if you wish, and the other line has the normal male DIN fitting.

My male flare above looks bad because I over tightened it whilst trial fitting it.

So to my question. Do I make the female/double flare with the SAE die and punches? There's no DIN female flare option with my flaring tool (a decent one). I have seen one diagram when looking that says that's what you do, but it's only one diagram from one source.



So how do you do it? (As they're brake lines I'm not keen on making a daft mistake with this.)

I did a few last week on my hot rod, and connected a couple of longer lines with the exact method, you have used there, one male flare, one female. I have to admit I don’t know what an Sae or Din flare really is, I just whatever my flaring kit produces.
