finger file belt sander

I find myself in the need of a finger file. I've only ever used pneumatic ones can anyone recommend a good brand. Had a look in Cromwell's but they want £200 for a Kobe? I know nothing about air tools so no idea if that is a good brand.

I've seen a 240V Makita for about £150 would that be a better option?

Used the Kobe files in production work in my last job, they survived the abuse quite well, normally died of cracked castings when they were dropped once too often.

Edit: don't take the Cromwell catalogue price as actual, talk to one of the salesmen and you'll get a better price.

I have a cheap one from aldi that I bought to see if it was worth having one. It's definitely worth having one and I haven't needed to replace it yet after over a year. If it ever does pack up I'll probably replace it with another one from aldi.

I've got one as well, decided at that price if it goes wrong I'll just wait until they are on offer again. Looking at the state they get in I think I'd have a job to invoke the 3 year guarantee, but I'd clean it up & ask though.

Screwfix belts fit the Aldi one, some don't last long, come apart at the join, but at £2.99 for 10 I can put up with that. Good ones are about £10 for 10 I think

Like Cobbler, I buy belts from screwfix and they last well enough. The only annoting thing is that the file comes with a thinner 10mm arm as well as the 13mm one and I can't find belts the right size anywhere, which is a shame because it was great for getting into really tight corners.

I bought an Evolution from Screwfix before Christmas to get into the awkward areas and smooth out weld when I am doing car restoration. I also bought some Screwfix belts, but these are rubbish. Might just have been a nad batch but all of them split at the glue'd join. The original few belts that came with the sander have never split and I have worn them right down to the canvas so looking forward to seeing Chunk's link to an alternatove supplier.

I bought a sealey electric one, came with 3 different heads for both 8mm and 13mm belt width, was about £60 and pretty decent for the money.

for aldi belt sanders I use 457 x 76 mm sanding belts, just cut to the correct with required over the glued join from the inside (with a craft/stanley knife) and then rip the belt along its length to get narrower belts.

I did try this with some screwfix belts a few years ago and the just broke at the glues join. it may have been a bad batch but I havnt used belts from there since

I use the generic Ferm/Ryas/Aldi/Lidl/Ryobi one with 457 X 13 belts. It has taken me 4 years of regular weekly hard work to wear out beyond repair the original Ferm version. I have been using and abusing the exactly the same but badged PowerZone one from Aldi for a good few months now without an issue.

I am using ceramic P36 belts which I purchased from Abrasives for Metal because I fell out with Abtec Abrasives over the quality of the Sait manufactured belts they were supplying and the fact they were not lasting 2 minutes in use.

It's 8mm, not 10mm. My mistake. Very handy for tight corners.

The website has changed layout since I last used it but they do made to measure. I bought a hundred zirconia a few years back to go on my Makita power file. price looks around the 30p per belt mark; and they are good quality.
