I used some old bricks like that, they were like sponges and sucked all the water out of the mortar, had to soak everything wet through first.
Looks pretty good to me. It's very slow going unless you're a pro, or at least I am but it's worth it when it's done.
I'd never laid a brick in my life but was forced into it when doing up a house, couldn't keep getting a brickie round to do little bits, had to learn myself.
Got a little bit adventurous when redoing the fireplace. The arch and base are fully rebuilt, sides are existing.
