First brick wall build. Help!

I used some old bricks like that, they were like sponges and sucked all the water out of the mortar, had to soak everything wet through first.

Well here's what an hour and a half got me!

Looks pretty good to me. It's very slow going unless you're a pro, or at least I am but it's worth it when it's done.

I'd never laid a brick in my life but was forced into it when doing up a house, couldn't keep getting a brickie round to do little bits, had to learn myself.

Got a little bit adventurous when redoing the fireplace. The arch and base are fully rebuilt, sides are existing.

Bit of an update on the wall building,
I've been at it for a few weekends dodging the rain....

Another couple of courses and then the soldier course!
The piers aren't great but overall I'm quite pleased with it.

That looks pretty darn good actually. I shall have a go at it myself some day.

One thing I dislike about the numerous ‘barn conversion’ new builds we see around is that the brickwork is far too perfect, for what is supposed to look like an old building. Sure looks they could tell the brickie to throw a few wonky bricks in, let the perfect rows wobble around a bit...

thats a nice job there to say your using used bricks

dosnt look at all out of place to be honest here except for the second pillar

though the wishing well does look in a right state now

All my work is rustic or shabby chic now, i can remember a time before those words were popular and i was called just plain old rough n ready

I understand where you're coming from and agree completely but I did a job like that about 5 years ago now and it was much harder than you'd think to build an 'imperfect' wall that's straight to be structurally sound but wonky at the same time!

Well here's the finished wall, I got it finished a few weeks ago but forgot to post a photo.

It been a pretty steep learning curve but I'm very pleased with it!
Other than the colour it matches the existing wall well and with a bit of weathering to the new and a jet wash to the old it'll look even better.

Been building a 9" today. Too dark for pictures when I packed up though
