Only problem is the pressure with an air ram just wouldn't be able to split the logs that's why they use hydraulics.

I'd absolutely get a heat pump in that case.
Oil is about 4p per kw. Still far cheaper than electric.

I'm with you, all that splitting/carrying (minimum of twice)/storing of your fuel source isn't for me either - although there's no denying there IS something primaeval and comforting about about a fire, enclosed or otherwise, when there's a storm howling outside.

the carrying and restacking you do in your home is for pure enjoyment of a log fire
though not good for the first up in the morning rule even I like the idea of expansion tank storage

I'd like to fit air conditioning, two split units, one for upstairs, one for down and then use them 'backwards' for heat in winter.
The problem is SWMBO would have them pumping out heat all autum, winter and spring as well as the oil fired central heating, the windows would be open and I would watching TV naked.

I've just dropped three cherry trees in my garden and cut the trunks into 12" sections (They are about 12" Dia.). When is the best time to split them into usable pieces? should i do it immediately, wait a few weeks or wait a year or so until they are dry?
I think they may dry quicker once split but I'm new to this wood-burning lark and would appreciate any advice.
