Fobco 1/2 Cap Drill Restoration

A problem has arisen. The head unit (assume this is correct terminology?) will not slide down the pillar. My friend advises me she's used lots of WD40 but to no avail - the unit has gone down a little bit but nothing like the amount they should - it should go right through the casing and that's just not happening right now.

I don't want it taken off as I want the machine compacted down for building a crate. I'm doing all of this remotely so I can't actually have a go at getting it down myself (quite frustrating).

Great minds think alike haha, I thought that and I have messaged her. Even with them both loosened pushing on two things instead of one at a time is tougher work. We will see what the answer is!

It'll just be rust and grime causing it to stick. Mine was hard work to get moving but once you get a bit of movement then the oil works in and it gets easier.

I don't think there's any easy answer other than plenty of thin oil (diesel or similar might work well?) and try moving - any direction will do even side to side just to break the crud.

Get the bottom collar moved down with plenty of oil maybe this will clear the way for the rest to slide down nicely.

Undo the locking handle on the drill and then give it a little tap to separate the two pieces that grip the pillar maybe its stuck.

You can see the locking mechanism standing up on the left. Tapping the thread with split these apart. Could even take them all the way out.

Lovely old drill, would love one the same. Have to say I love the "weathered" paint, I think I would restore it mechanically and leave the casing as it is, a beautiful patina of age and hard work making things.

Loosen the collar underneath and move it down just a bit - if the body does move suddenly (I know that's unlikely if it's well gummed up) it will stop it from smacking the chuck into the table!

Like daleyd said don't move both pieces at once its very heavy.

Never thought much of WD40 as a penetrating oil - Plus gas is much better if you can get it. If your friend has some acetone nail polish remover tell her to mix some 50/50 with auto transmission fluid for an excellent penetrating mixture. When you do finally get your hands on it I have complete illustrated strip-down instructions if you pm me.

Surely the crate will need to be the same size if the head is up or down. The column will still be the same height!
It may end up being less top heavy, but it will still be just as tall no matter where the head sits.

Right you are, the crate will be less heavy but if I were packing it I would like the thing to be more compact, and less top heavy. We are going to pack it as it is, I'm the one with more mechanical experience, so I'll take a proper look at it once it gets here and treat you all to some pictures

Can anyone recommend me the correct type of circlip pliers I need for this machine, also do I need bearing pullers to get the pulleys of the shafts?

Be careful with the bearings i changed mine but The drill had more slop after changing them maybe someone can recommend the correct lower bearings.

I put the old ones back in and its running perfect.

There were 4 bearings 2 * SKF 7202BEP and 2 * KLNJ7/8
