Foot Pedal

as a foot pedal for my welder.
I have a 7 Pin switch from my old tig torch.
If I solder it am I able to have a foot switch

I'm no expert but that looks like a simple on off switch. not really any use for anything connected to welding.

You can use it as a remote on / off switch, I have one almost the same, they can be handy when working on delicate jobs or in difficult torch positions, but obviously it will not control the welding current, you need a proper foot pedal suited to your welder for that

Mine was £12 from the 'bay, I just had a quick look and can find what looks like the same pedal from various sellers made by Bespeco... one place has it for 50p plus £11.50 postage and another wants a tenner but 6 quid carrriage. There really are some comedians about.

Essentially yes, it's a box with a variable resistor (potentiometer) in it. You'll probably also have to work out a way of fitting a microswitch to initiate the weld.

My welder switch is a 7 Pin one.
What the footpedal cable should be?
A 3 core one or 7 core cable?

It's an Inverter Fusion 200 right? Wiring schematics here... http://www.inverterfusion.co.uk/Manuals/HF%20PHF%20Instruction%20Manual.pdf As per the manual it's common for manufacturers to use plugs with more pins than needed- my Lincoln has a 5 pin socket for the on/off switch which only uses 2 wires for example, while the foot remote uses 5 pins (of a 6 or more pin plug), two wires for the momentary micro switch, the other 3 for the pot

Bill, it's one with a pot.
As per hotrodder's it uses two pins of the plug for the microswitch to start /stop the welder and the other three for the pot... so mine has 5-core cable.
The welder has a 'Local/Remote' switch that swaps between the onboard pot. and that in the pedal. It's configured so that the pedal varies the current from zero (well OK, about 10A) upto whatever maximum you set the onboard pot. at.

It is clear that I need a 5 core Footpedal where i could fit the 7 pin switch that I have from the tig or purchase one seperatly.
I done some search in ebay and it seems that the most footpedals are 3 core one.
Wedg1e do by any chance, could give me the brand of your footpedal or give any info what footpedal to purchase and do the adjustments?

You're wanting the foot switch acting as a basic on/off switch with a separate pot' for controlling weld current? Doesn't really matter what you use. Pot's are cheap and readily available, so you can add a suitable one to any switch.

This model seems come with a basic potentiometer .
About the wiring now I assume I will have to purchase a 5 core cable and plus a switch.
Any info on that .What kind of cable to go for?
Also what Ohm the potentiometer should be?

That does look a lot like mine, Bill.

You could change the standard pot. for a version that has a switch built-in so that when you rock the pedal all the way back it turns the switch (and hence the weld arc) off...I did mine with separate pot. and switch which caused me more work!
The only thing to watch for is that you get a 'linear' and not 'logarithmic' pot... log. pots are usually used for volume controls where the bottom end of the control has less effect for more precise control.
What you need is a linear pot so whatever arc you move it through, has the same 'span' of resistance as the next arc, if you follow. That said, a log. poit. would still work and you might prefer the progressive response it'd give you... experiment away
About 10KOhm would probably do.

You need cable with some mechanical protection as it will be dragged around the floor so something like SY or CY if it needs to be screened - link
