Tonight, and all day today, the ****ty media have been harping on about the loss of a model -"the Fiesta"
Truth is tjough, ots,only a name, its not a beetle, or a mini, its just a name.
The fact that out carp mefia have nothing better to find to discuss pees me right off, and this forum is just as bad.
Give up, desist, reminisce all you like, but don't bemoan the Fiesta, it went 25 yrs ago...

The ford s-max is a good bit smaller than a transit but due to some clever design it has loads of interior space. It also still looks good whereas the van based ones still look like a van with windows or a minibus. Very nice to drive too, despite its size it still feels car like.
His idea of changing now was to buy a diesel when he still can, before everything goes electric! He does quite a few long journeys & an electric vehicle wouldn't suit him.

What I‘ve always found odd, is that when governments are doing as much as possible to lower vehicle emissions and most car owners want more mpg, why the car buying public are being steered around to buying cars that are bigger and bigger.
Bigger the car, more the weight, more to drag around, more fuel, more emissions?
Car park spaces not big enough, house garages not big enough, etc?
Shouldn’t we be pushed back towards smaller cars?

If the connect is to big then the courier is smaller. The little ford vans handle very well I bet you would be hard pushed to tell the difference handling wise. The courier is a little rocket. And the new incarnation of the little vans due out this year or next actually look really good with windows. They look like the designers have built them to be a people carrier rather than a van with windows.
The other thing is typically buying a van with windows you typically get a lot more vehicle for your money. I would love a crew van for the family car but the Mrs won't have it.
The big drivers toward bigger cars have been crash safety and aerodynamics.
Crumple zones, impact protection bars, and curvy aerodynamic panels require space.
For most vehicles over the generations, the amount of space inside the vehicle hasn't increased that much compared with the outside.

I love my small cars but I wouldn't have a fiesta. Since driving (32years) I've only had three daily driver cars, first was a mazda 323 3 door, next a three cylinder suzuki swift, and my now car a suzuki swift 3 door. All good mpg, great for parking and most important very reliable.
There isn't one. The Chinese get one but we don't.
TBH while I have one (a Mondeo that is) there is not a version since 2010 that I'd want. So while a little bit of me sheds a tear on it being discontinued, it's not like they made a version I'd want anyway!
The same can't be said of the Fiesta, while it's not practical enough to actually buy one (with two children and a largish dog) I would quite like a Fiesta ST.
For that you can blame the EU and now also EV's.
The rules on fleet emissions means that heavier "fleets" get higher CO2 limits. This has the unintended (but obvious) consequences that SUV's have been heavily pushed which in turn makes them popular. Helped too because they are more profitable for the manufacturers.
It's similar to the unintended (ha!) consequences of the changes in VED and BIK driving everyone to Diesel, its fully intended by the manufacturers regardless of how good or desirable it is for everyone else.
Equally with the mass of batteries required small cars just aren't practical for anything other then very short range. You could if you desire take the smaller ones on a longer journey but the frequent stops would be very annoying. So by the time you've got 500kg of battery you need a fairly chunky car round it.
