A few points of note:

It looks like the coloured rings may be hot melt adhesive. Technique I use is to melt that area both ends which stabilises the joint, followed by the solder ring.

It would be good to have some in-between sizes, but if it is a little loose, I tinned the wires generously.

Ive got one of the Aldi irons, it's a super bit of kit, I tend to use it in preference to the electric one. It's even better as it was half price

Dunno if it would help but I bought a solder rework station which pumps out hot air to a specified temperature. You'd then be able to set it up and get consistent results every time...mine was about £30. I needed it to pull off some chips from a board which meant having to melt the solder on all the pins at the same time....but not overheat the chip itself (maybe I have too many hobbies )

First one pulled apart, possibly because I disturbed it too soon. This one seemed to work OK, but need to beware of burning the wire. Looks OK under magnification and the sleeving has conformed nicely.

They look good, I've ordered some too. How are they fitted, with a soldering iron on the outside of the sleeve or with a hot air gun?

Well it worked! Took a good hour to reinstall though.

I am left with three issues now, I wonder if there are any experts lurking?

Key on, Engine off KOEO test:

Getting code 76 which is "VAF did not respond" which is intriguing as the car doesn't have one. ECU is the correct one for the engine spec of MAP sensor and HEGOs. There has been a suggestion that it could be a MAP sensor fault, but not sure why that would produce a VAF code.

Key on, Engine running KOER test:

Code 12 which is "idle speed out of range (high)". I have gone through all the vacuum lines and gasketed joints and not found any air leaks. Idle Speed Control Valve has been replaced and both the old and replacement cleaned. Throttle butterflies are correctly closing and have been cleaned out anyway.

Code 41 which is "HEGO sensor right bank reporting lean". I suspect that the sensor heater may be faulty, I will investigate that tomorrow. Now if the sensor is reporting an error, I assume that the engine will stay in open loop as if it were cold and I wonder if that could be holding the idle speed high? That having been said, during the test routine, I would expect the ECU to ignore inputs and just control the item under test.

I'm aware that with some cars [BMW in my experience] disconnecting the battery and holding the neg and pos terminals together for a moment or two forces a factory reset, so it might be worth a try [proceed at your own risk].

That's not to say the codes won't immediately recur if there's a fault, but it should eliminate any historic codes.
