Classic "I have to have a premium car", but can't afford to service it type owner?

More 'I like to think I have a premium car' and it shouldn't need to be serviced as often as the dealers say, it's just a money-making exercise, besides, I don't doo that much mileage... Followed by 'well why has the <whatever> failed? it's only a few (usually means a number less than 10) years out of warranty, surely it should last a lot longer? All of which we have to pre-empt so often I have a word file I can copy and paste the relevant text from, which saves me typing it out several times a month, if not a week...

Purely by chance, had a 68 plate diesel with loss of power issues, been to an indie and had the low pressure EGR valve replaced - no different, lots of low boost related DTC's and they reckoned the EGR was leaking or losing it's position reference which is why they changed it....
Service history - first service at dealer, after that, no records although the SII had been reset sporadically and no indication of what oil specification had been used (the current owner bought at three years old but didn't bother keeping service records or receipts), mileage is circa 55k. Anyway, drove it in, definite loss of power, EML illuminated and a tell-tale turbo vane screech, sure enough, turbo bushings failed but very little oil around - this is why:-

The cause could be any or all of:-
Extended service interval
Incorrect specification engine oil
Predominantly low speed/temperature journeys.

It's not a failure we see often so it's unlikely to be an inherent defect.

Did you do an oil change at the same time? What state was the current engine oil in?
If thats the state of the banjo oil feed bolt who can say what state the rest of the oil galleries are in

We've quoted for turbo (always include a new feed pipe & banjo anyway) plus displaced parts seals & gaskets, engine oil & filter change + C&D driver to do 100 miles in one go followed by another oil & filter change. Amusingly, she (it's usually a 'she') asked if there would be any discount given that she'd paid out for the EGR valve and 'diagnosis' elsewhere, we pointed out that we were not responsible for misdiagnosis and un-needed repairs by others, apparently she said 'but they used genuine parts so you must have made something out of it' - and yes, the keyring has an outsize brand badge on it, so she can wave it around in public....

Thankfully dealing with fleets, lack of servicing is fairly rare.
Biggest thing I need to provide are diagnostic scans highlighting driver abuse, after the inevitable "It just stopped".
Which usually translates to, there was a big red flashing warning telling me to stop for several minutes before the vehicle did stop, but because I wanted to get home, I just kept driving, or the engine was doing 6500rpm at 50mph when it "just stopped", because I missed 4th and dumped it in to 2nd instead.

Years ago we had a company van that was an Mk.3 Escort diesel, there were three regular drivers (not me!) that had been telling the boss that the gearchange was a bit iffy - a common problem, the plastic cup below the selector used to wear and you lost the 'gate'. His response was along the lines of 'you just need to drive it properly' - until he was driving it and went from 4th to 1st coming up to a junction... it made quite a mess of the rocker cover, but apparently it 'just stopped'....

You do realise that engine is likely to grenade itself and you can be sure she'll be back trying to blame the failure on the work you've done?
I'd be suggesting she moves it on swiftly and maybe in future she might actually service her cars?

Ive not done masses with "modern" engines but they do seem to be dirty things inside, this was the sump off a chainchucker Z2.2SE GM engine, always serviced on a regular basis and correct spec GM oil

We've sent the photos and a nice full A4 page worth of disclaimer and suggested remedial action - essentially 'we're suggesting a replacement engine, if you ignore this recommendation and only authorise the repairs based upon the initial diagnosis, don't come crying to us, we will only proceed with the original repair or the now recommended repair based upon findings whilst removing parts to carry out the originally quoted for work upon receipt of confirmation of your understanding of potential for consequential damage due to your failure to maintain your vehicle.'

So yer, I do know the potential for further damage, assuming it's not already on it's way!

Really? DV6 were always quite lump-free when I was involved with them - taxis? we get a lot that choke themselves to death due to long periods idling and low rev/temperature running never burning off any carbon so it just blocks the oilways like a smokers arteries, camshafts, followers & lifters are the usual first line repair.

Not taxis - just retail punters that never change the oil - or use the wrong oil!

DV6 engines kill turbos...

DV10 engines wear followers and lifters...

Clean oil is cheaper than engines. Cheepest maintenance going mate....

Spread the word! But people think I am selling overpriced servicing. But the truth is - I am trying to avoid selling overpriced engines!

Mate, I wish people would get out of the received wisdom of 'all <whatever grade> oils are the same, you don't need to use the expensive stuff, it's a waste of money'. Maybe last century when 10W40 was £4.99 for five litres and 'those in the know' put a bit of diesel in the oil filler and ran for 10 mins to 'loosen the cr@p' before draining it out, and if that didn't work, you could get a 'Blue Diamond' recon engine for £400 and your mate would fit it in the street for £50.... Remember the Magnatec adverts? 'Liquid Engineering' that's what people need to realise engine oil is.

Seems to be true of the transit 2.4`s, ignore that death rattle on start up at your peril. Some of ours have let go at less than 80k, others are ok at 150k so god only knows whats going on with fords.2.8 mitzy chain in my truck is still quiet at nearly 300k.
Often wonder if service intervals wouldn't be better gauged with hour meters, 10k of city driving involves considerably more engine time than a reps car on a motorway.

I suspect even back in the day some timing chains weren't that brilliant, one of the main issues today is that with engine management the ECU knows the chain has stretched. I remember lots of people buying specific cars/vehicles because they had a chain and not a belt. Now it seems big portion of the engines that suffer from timing issues have chains. We changed a chain on my lads 1.3 Yaris, car ran fine but engine management light was on and flagging a cam correlation error. When we had the chain out it was probably 20mm longer than the new one even though it was still a loop so technically 40mm longer total length.

LR Series 2.25 diesels are terrible for stretching chains and fiddly to set up, I have often though about looking using the belt and pulleys from 2.5NA engine and seeing how easy it would be given the blocks are the same/very similar. I've got a 2.5NA block that has 2.25 diesel timing gear and injector pump on it so I doubt it would too difficult and would cure one of if not the biggest issue with those engines

Febreze sprayed in the car, and sold as a a/c service
Lockers full of pollen and oil filters
Empty and refill brake reservoir wipe bleed nipples with fluid on your finger, sold as full flush, same with engine coolant

Back in the day my mate had loads of Cavalier and Vectra spark plugs in his tool box at home because he had never changed one on a service, he also said counting 10-20 seconds with the sump plug out was common practise whilst doing oil changes. PDI for lease cars meant leave it parked up with the bonnet open for a couple of hours. When any new model fast car came in everyone had a go in it. That said the factory was just as bad, they had a Tigra burning oil/smoking after a few hundred miles, factory ran out of the correct pistons so fitted two slightly smaller ones!!

My Volvo had a full dealer history and with receipts for work done totalling hundreds, I had to order some brackets for the intake pipe because when they had it in bits at the dealer they clearly couldn't get the bracket to fit so left it off so it didn't look obvious. All that was required was slackening of some hose clamps and line stuff up. The pollen filter clearly had not been changed on the previous two services given how much debris was in it and the date stamp.

Not surprised. I see that a lot. Dealer stamps and stuff not being done.

Customer has a horse lorry. Built on a MAN chassis cab. It’s been ‘serviced’ from new and was sold as such.

I had to cut an access panel in the back of a locker to get the air filter out

I’m working my way through the faults as I have time and they have money. I’ll grab photos if I remember. Some stuff has simply never been done. Basics as well.
