And are the owner drivers of these vehicles waiting 25,000 miles or is it the big corporations, I’ll bet it’s the latter Though it’s a slightly different situation with an HGV plugging along for hours and hours at 1500 rpm

Owner drivers if the forums are to be believed. The manufacturer interval for say Kenworth, which I guess the big corporations follow, is 45-50,000 miles!

HGVs in the UK anywhere between 50 and 150k engine oil changes, most transmission oils are 3 years or 300k.
Engine failure due to wear and tear is almost unheard of, trucks with over a million kms are everywhere, where I work we have approx 150 trucks and up until 2 months ago nothing had less than a million on the clock, and many were kissing 1.5 million.

I occasionally follow an owner driver who posts video - he bought his third truck, an extended sleeper, as his "Corvette" (didn't need it, just wanted it) with well over a million miles on it - put it straight to work.

I’ve done all of the maintenance on my cars since I was 17 years old I was lucky enough to have a job as a mechanic as my first job though I didn’t stay on and I’m not time served. I’m convinced that most of the issues with modern engines in general are from poor service schedules. Manufacturers specify oil and filter changes at ridiculously high mileages, 18,000 mile oil is 18,000 mile oil, it degrades and is way way past its best at that stage and will already have caused some damage, especially to seals on hydraulic tensioners, turbochargers etc.
I‘ve never bought a new car in my life, when I replace a car it’s generally around 8 years old, 1 owner and full main dealer history with low mileage (around 80K) I‘ve been buying high spec BMW’s for the past 25 years for very sensible money, some other eejit has paid the depreciation.
I change the oil and filters in my cars every 5000 miles, good quality Millers oil and Mann or Meyle filters, I buy the oil in 25 litre drums it’s cheaper that way, my cars are looked after way more meticulously than the service schedule, my cars have always been totally reliable ….. I wonder why? Well apart from my german air cooled but I’m sure it’ll be an issue caused by someone else who had been in there before!
My point is that I’d be surprised if shoddy maintenance and too long between oil and filter changes is not the reason why modern engines are self destructing on a regular basis, and wonder how many of these engines would still be running if only they’d a service twice per year.

I have no experience or knowledge of the Ford ecoboost problems other that what I read online but have a lot of interest in JLRs current woes. Their 2.0 L diesel Ingenium problems are well documented with failed dpf regens dumping diesel into the engine oil, diluting it so much that timing chains and balance shafts are wearing and breaking taking the engines out with them leaving owners with a massive bill for replacement. This is all avoidable with shorter oil change issues but of course extended service intervals to bring down cost of ownership are the main concerns for fleet and pcp users. If it lasts 3 years then some other mug will inherit the potential problems out of warranty. A Discovery Sport would be the natural replacement for my older (reliable ) Freelander 2 but I'm not prepared to take the risk buying a used one. If I bought new and changed oil every 6k instead of 18k or 21k intervals I bet it would be issue free but not in a position to pay £50k or thereabouts for a car. Modern cars who needs them?

I think the first couple of years of Disco Sport production used a different engine which was fine. The problem with the Ingenium engine was they couldn't get the dpf close enough to the engine due to the design of the Disco.

That's correct they used the 2.2L that the Freelander 2 uses initially (its actually a Ford/PSA designed engine. These are much sought after by people determined to avoid such issues.

I never imagined that a disco sport of any sort/model would be sought after

The issue is, if you've bought the vehicle second hand, then unless you have a proven full dealer service history, you have no idea if the engine has been serviced correctly.

Sadly even a full dealer history is absolutely no guarantee of perfect servicing. I've had a couple mates who were main dealer mechanics and the stories they tell wouldn't give you any faith in that history. The only saving grace is a manufacturer may pay towards a repair even outside warranty but it will be a battle.

Sucking an eggcup of oil out of the dipstick tube and wiping the filter clean. Even easier with modern engine's and internal filters.

No I can't really - I've worked in seven dealers, all with bonus structures in place - not one of them had tech's cutting corners on services or repairs, yes, there's always quicker ways of doing things especially if the filterspinners just do the services and wear items, but anyone not carrying out a service to spec. would soon be pulled up by the other techs, let alone workshop controller / aftersales manager.
Maybe the ones I've worked at are the exceptions? I did hear of a guy that came from a backstreet to a dealer as a prep tech, didn't last three months as he was found to be binning pollen filters on some of the prep services - too difficult to get at apparently. He'll never work at a dealers round here again.

Fell out with Ford when they tried similar on first service on my new truck.

I’d heard rumours before it went in. They claimed full service and stamped book. UV pen don’t lie.

What shocks me thou - is when the Euro's van shows up here - and other motor factors deliver - how much none OE parts are on the vans going to main dealer franchises.

I see the drivers delivery manifests as I sign them - the list of dealerships getting deliverys of non OE parts.

They must now be offering "economy servicing and repairs"?

Most likely for non-brand servicing or used car prep. There is a Ford dealer opposite where I work that sells used & services any marque. The same goes for a Vauxhall dealer not too far away, the Volvo dealers used car pitch has ~60% non-Volvo cars on it.

Mate of mine has a Service and MOT station. He has been in the motor trade all his life. You can trust him with anything and it will be right or he will put it right on his own time, he takes real pride in doing it right, sometimes the little guy is your best bet.

I know Evans Halshaw's policy is to fit the cheapest parts to anything that isn't in the workshop for genuine servicing/repairs.

I'm an ex main dealer technician that was on bonus and while we might might have fiddled the system to get bonus one month and not the next when it was close but not reaching target we never did dodgy servicing.And it was always genuine parts.

I am an Indie garage owner - I have never got my head around this "main dealer bonus thing".

Dealership workshops looks to me like hell from what I have seen - stress hell - sales reptiles - warranty work.

Does not look like "my cup of tea" mate...

We had bonus if not taking unreasonable time off over a three month period, ie throwing a sicky. Parts target and labour target. Service mangager had a few warrrenty jobs always held back (not many, it was mazda) that he could call and get in if we were close, then jobs could be invoiced either early or late to suit acheivement and once or twice fake jobs were booked out and paid for by us so we could get that magic target.
The thing is it wasn't a stressed job, mainly servicing or pdi's due to the cars being ultra reliable.Morning get a few services done, afternoon a couple of pdi's.
