The stuff I used was a can a mate left in my workshop, smoked a bit, red can labelled with something about silicone. Cant remember if it said contains Si or no Si.

The biggest problem we have is them loosing bits. Especially small cleats but more worryingly, bigger bits i.e beams, stair treads on occasion. Usually go out on someone elses delivery and no doubt get ditched at their end when they don't recognise it.
I do remember the galvanisers loosing a 8m long bridge we made once.........

I've had work done at Yorkshire Spin Galvanisers in Rotherham and the quality of their work is very good. As the name implies, they spin the pieces to be galvanised in a big basket to remove excess galv, which gives a better finish. Consequently there is a size limit on pieces they can accept.
I fitted a few of the bits on Monday, including the one in the picture. It probably isn't as bad as I first thought although I spent a lot of time filing the hand rails etc so they were smooth to touch.
It's still not perfect but overall looks ok.

What about the stairs being on the very edge of the cliff wall ? It looks very unsafe.
there are 3 galvanising companies in the Glasgow area - Scottish galvanisers(part of the Wedge Galvanising group); Highland Colour coaters and Clydeside galvanisers.
I have used both Scottish and Highland for dipping trailers. Scottish Galvanisers totally messed up the job and managed to mess it up again after i told them i wanted it re-dipped as I was not happy with the finish - more zinc spray paint than galv!!! So we havent used them since for any ATV trailers.
I would reccommend Highland Colour coaters based in Cumbernauld on the outskirts of Glasgow - they have dipped 5 trailers for us now - think ATV style farm trailers with 3ft high solid sides - and they have come out well with only minor rough edges to be smoothed down.
I haven't used Clydeside Galvanisers yet due to their outrageous quote of 300 + VAT to dip a 100Kg trailer!!!! but they have the widest bath out of the 3!
Scottish and Highland do pick up/delivery. And Highland also do powder coating over the galv if required!
Galvanizers can break your heart. Half the time and effort you put into your work can be filing and linishing in order to get the appearance as best you can. Unfortunately unless you're giving them an Ifor Williams amount of work they won't give a flying ****. They have you by the ******** because hot dip galvanizing is impossible to do on a small scale without costing more than it would already. Galvanizing has been around for half a century now I honestly believe we can't be that far away from a technology that will supercede it. In the way we are seeing with powder coating at the moment becoming easier for the small operator, how good would it be to have an affordable substitute to hot zinc available for the little man.
Thank you that man. As far as size is concerned, am I going to have trouble with an 8 x 4 trailer at any of the Glasgow depots?

Might be highland coulor that the local firm uses
it all depends on the dimensions of the trailer. if its a basic trailer chassis with no sides on it it will fit no problem in the galv bath of any of the companies i mentioned. Scottish Galvanisers Ltd can handle up to approx. 1m wide, 7m long and the bath is approx 3m deep. Highland Colour Coaters can handle up to 1.2m wide approx and the rest of the measurements are the same. I think Clydeside Galvanisers have a wider galv bath, but there prices seem to be far too high for individual items.
Highland prices are 77p per kilo - includes VAT and all surcharges.

Thats expensive, i know we get business rates but we pay 350 quid a tonne; 35p a kilo. They once tried to charge us 'off the street' rates and that was 500 quid a tonne.

if your going to paint it coat it with manor coatings plasticoat . it sprays or hand paints direct after coating with no preperation or weathering 
pretty sure it is a retaining wall holding back all that earth so I hope it is ok.

The only paint to come close to Galvaniz*ing is Micaceous iron oxide (MIO). A very interesting paint as it goes, it is the only paint that has been used throughout the world and has stood the test of time. The USA doesn't have a domestic supply, so had to develop different paint, to protect "thier" structures around the world. Because of this lots of data has been accumulated and very easy comparison, has been made between Micaceous iron oxide and the best the USA can produce. They lost
.Both work by having very large crystals that over lay each other, and have the ability to repair protecting the material underneath.
So unless massive Infrared ovens and thermal spraying suddenly becomes cheaper, I don't think so.
