Mio is lovely stuff! paint masts with that at work. Even after years of being on the. At every time you touch it it leaves silvery speckles on you. The tins must be well stirred with a beater first and it goes on thick and covers everything. Best to use a tossing brush....

yup great stuff when they painted the pylons round our way i relieved em of a few gallon and painted me shed not good on a residential structure though ok on farms and trailers or industrial

it's come down in price the first time I bought some was '91. Luckily the wife was working for ICI at the time otherwise it was going to be £90 for 5ltrs. Bought some 3yrs ago and it was £29.50 for 5ltrs. That was a nice supprise.

Funnily enough I was at my mothers today and she has a Allen rotary mower, that I rebuilt in '83, and it looks like I painted last yr

The riggers at work spray 600ft masts with it! The spray rig they have can spray plaster with the right nozzle. Will probity paint my trailer frame with it when I get a spare day

have to agree galavnizing is a total nightmare .
stuff gets lost ,damaged or comes back like a bears ****.
made the mistake of galvanizing me kids buggy we made together just so it could be left in field.
25mm tube bent,cod mouthed and tiged nice and tidy.
came back a total fecking mess.

MIO is terrible stuff to try to drill through. Blunts mag drill bits like nothing else.

Have to grind a patch off before drilling, and to get the magnet to stick.

Quite a good bit of information that.

Net result.....won't rust, but looks absolutely terrible!

Think it quite often gets overcoated with something a bit easier to get a nicer finish on, on structural stuff i've seen anyway.
It's almost like its part of the steel, won't chip off with a hammer, and is a sod to grind off. The dust stinks

looks a possibility as a finish for my work, but I dont want to be spending a fortune on 5l of something that does not give a reasonable finish.
The comments about finish did look a bit iffy.
I sahll have to go scratting about the internet looking for a small sample pot of it.

I've a mate who is foreman at a galvanizing plant so get smaller stuff done free. Owners know and have told me to just buy a big bag of Lidl, Aldi etc cheap biscuits for the rest room
Anyway from what I've learnt crap galv finish is down to crap operators. As others have already said you need to ensure nothing left on the surface of the work that the acid bath can't remove. In fact leave the item outside so it gains surface rust to get the best finish as the acid removes that easily (I sometimes get rusty car parts acid dipped to clean them up before repairing). Also any area that doesn't rust is an indicator that it also probably won't be cleaned by acid either.
When drilling holes for galv drain make sure you also drill small holes so they can hang the item from wire if you don't want them to wrap wire around the whole structure. That way at worse you get the wire "bonded" with galv into the hole instead of on a more visible surface.
The galv bath get all sorts of rubbish put in it and that rises to the surface. Decent companies rake the surface so that the item being dipped comes out of the bath in a clean area. Crap operaters can't be bothered and just lift it out so all the surface rubbish sticks to the galv hence the poor finish (but to be fair still galv underneath).
Decent companies use an airline to blow big gobs of still molten galv off lower edges / corners.
Spinning is best but not very common. Don't consider having anything like a wheel galv'd unless spun
Mate tells me a lot of the people who work under him don't give too hoots about the job. Ramming a fork lift at speed into gates and damaging them is so common that there is an engineering company next to the galv plant that just does "invisible" repairs so customer doesn't realise the item they spend ages aligning carefully was treated so badly.
If you aren't happy with finish complain. The owners of a decent plant would prefer that than loose work by word of mouth that they do a crap job.

What i do sometimes is ask for a little of what ever the big company is selling as a private customer and say, can you do me some and put the cash towards the charity box, usually works and i get things cheap with no VAT etc.

I have to second what compo says, I dealt with one of the afforementioned companies outside of glasgow, I had some very ornate gates hot dipped and powder coated there.

The gates had to go back twice to be finished properly, First time, they came back sharp with "icicles", so much so that I cut my hands as I unwrapped them, the roughest finish I had ever seen and the powder coat was uneven... me, not happy!!

Got them collected and re-done and was satisfied.

Then got a call a year later from my clients to tell me the gates were corroding badly. Galv company sent a technician out to confirm this, and they got sent back again to be re-done, and I had quite heated discussions with a manager there who was insisting that they were not liable for this. I got the Galvanizing Association involved and the problem was rectified. Said manager incidentally was sacked afterwards not directly due to this situation but I have no doubt this was indicative of his manner and standard of work.

In the end I got a personal visit to my workshop by one of the directors of the company, and a 25 year written contractual guarantee of their work, that was now 3 years ago, and the gates are in fine condition. So, it took a while, but got there in the end.

I have now moved so don't use them anymore but I have learned my lessons and now I am super picky, and a super pain in the backside to the companies who finish my work, all in a nice way of course!!
