Garage & Condensation???

That is scarry,2 gallons means,to me ,that you must have the dehumidifier running 24/7.This is a very interesting thread,what sort of bricks do you have.I am just a learner in this subject

One cubic meter of air can have up to a litre of water in it at certain temps and humidities.

I need to take off any "dross" on my bricks and then cover with silicon sealer.Any ideas of a good sealer?

I have had my insurance loss adjusters to my house and the problem is,as previous threads,is collapsing cavity wall insulation.I know you must be fed up of this gripe but I do have an option of having a builder take out several rows of bricks and hoovering out the fallen compressed insulation.I am lead to belive that this is quite an expensive operation.The question is do I leave the faulty insulation in the wall and just coat the bricks with silicon.Any help please!

We now live in a much better designed house and use the dehumidifier for drying clothes in the airing cupboard - brightspark's quite right, for ideal extraction it's something like 35°C @ 100% RH. What we find is that we can dry three or four 6Kg washing machine loads in about 24Hr. If there is no washing in a the machine is on the room drops to < 3% RH (the lowest I can measure) and maintains about 25°C. Space is very small, maybe 8' x 4' @ 2.8m ceiling.

In the previous house (which we bought two dehumidifiers for) we got 1 - 1.5 gallons a night - the landlord claimed there was "no problem"

the kettle and wifey with her super dooper steam iron and the tumble-dryer and cooker - make most of it its suprising how much just breathing causes it as well - the actual building is bone dry no dampness anywhere

my advice take the lot out otherwise you will have more trouble later, you can do it yourself if you want to make it cheaper

it does the job by reflecting the water off the wall than allowing it to soak into it any water thats within can still come out though

also buy yourself a sprayer you can do a full 2 floors high wall in 1/2 a day including 2 coats

thompsons waterseal or similar. theres cheaper makes 2 good coatings in dry weather.-it will last a few years to test--if its still ok chuck a bucket of water over it on wall if it soaks in re coat if it just runs off leaving bobbles of water on surface its fine presumably your talking the whole walls not just the bottom foot up from ground

I have done pretty much all of the above over the summer...

1. Made sure the ventilation bricks in the garage are clear of crud
2. Got an industrial dehumidifier from an industrial auction site for £25, drilled a hole through the wall, and run a pipe to permanently take the condensate out
3. Put in 110mm insulation into the roof space

Compared to this time last year, I have zero condensation on anything in there and all of the tools that I sanded last year to remove the rust are still (mostly) shiny.

I have a similar problem, as the guy who used to live next door decided to try to turn his garden into a premier league football stadium. To do this he leveled off the garden and added soil, making his garden higher than ours and when it rains the water runs in and seeps through the cavity blocks at the bottom of the one off the walls in my shed. Its not too bad but make that corner of my shed constantly damp.
Any idea's on how to seal up blockwork ?

Yes tell him to remove the soil from your boundary.

At the very least he needs to remove the soil from the wall and replace with gravel, so the water can drain.

Thanks shox dr, but the soil isn't up against my wall, its up against his (badly built) wall, the water seeps through to the lower level and up against the side of my shed. I'll put up with it until the spring, and get some of that paint on tar stuff mrfuzzy suggested.

Thanks Brightspark. I.I went in to B@Q today to search for ideas.It looks like I am going have to take all the insulation from the cavity.Several Forum members have given their advise,which I am great full for.

Just gone on line.Mr Fuzzy that could help to sort the problem.If you look at the how to use instructions on the Thompsons paint it says that,before painting,any dross should be removed,NOT with a wire brush but with a stiff paint brush.Lost me!

I bought a dehumidifier, but I would like a little heater in there with a thermostat that can be left on 24/7 safely but not sure what type of heater is safe to do this. I am going to kingspan the roof and walls when money permits. . . doesnt help my garden is like a swimming pool due to neighbours been higher as they decided to pave the whole garden.

If its wet put in ground drains, the pipe with holes in surrounded by gravel, run water away to a drain or somewhere.

Heaters in sheds on thermostats can be an expensive option espescially if you burn the place down. Id look at greenhouse heaters, or whats used to be called a black heater, like a finned casting, or airing cupboard heater

Can I jump in please and ask for advice I have concrete blocks that are 3deep high that I intend to build on with timber frame then clad with timer etc for my shed / workshop . But my question is should I render the block work or can I use this water seal liquid that has been mentioned early , on block work ?

As you can see concrete block work is soaked through at the minute ..

outside just paint on water repellant stuff so any rain water running down wall dosnt seep through
