When colin furze built his shed the size that he wanted was £1600 from a b&q type kit but he built it with his own cladding and 2x4 etc for £1200.

That looks like a plan, I need to do drawings and work out what wood to buy.

I spent ages researching sheds, twice. My conclusions, the cold rolled galvenised kits, are very good, but quite expensive, and you need at least an insulated roof, if you want to use it for most things. For sheds /workshops wood is a better option also cheaper, better to deal with from a condensation perspectve too. But so many of the wood kit sheds are absolute garbage, you do get what you pay for. 1/2 inch feather edge on skinny frames are very common. Build your own or go to a decent supplier such as Warwick garages, there are others, but theirs are the best sheds Ive seen from a shed supplier.

Im currently awaiting delivery of a steel framed live stock building, the steel frame in girders is some what cheaper than the cold rolled galvanized. When shopping around, paint specs vary a lot. Many are just in red oxide, or others zinc phosphate primers. And tring to repaint after 5 years would be difficult once its clad. Again for the wall cladding wood is cheaper than box profile, for the roof Ive opted for fibre cement as its for animals.

The use of the building will play a big part in what you go for. Buy cheap buy twice!

Thats a decent shed, I also suggest laying a dpm under the walls to separate then from the damp brick. Also didnt like the polyrhene, prefer to use roofing membrane that breathes.

I just moved my own shed, and someone here mentioned that, so I bought a £4 roll from Screwfix and laid a strip under each of the the bearers that sit on the slabs, to stop water wicking up.

I may have missed it , but what's the figure in your head?

Originally thinking around the £1,200 mark not including the base but it's looking closer to 2k if I go the insulated metal panel route.

Crikey, thats big numbers, it must be double height. Would expect them to do the groundworks for that price. Had a quote of around £3,500 for 80mm insulated metal panel shed delivered and assembled. I was meant to go look at them but then the lockdown happened which gave me time to look into building it myself.

I had that idea years ago, couldn’t see a downside. Never actually did it though. How does it stack up price wise against buying a concrete sectional garage?

I'm hoping to build a garden shed approximately 3 x 4m (10 x 13ft). Timber frame would be the easier option however I want something that is maintenance free(ish) and longer lasting. I looked at a few cheaper 'off the shelf' metal sheds and was surprised how flimsy they are. You could easily put your boot through them so looking for something a bit more robust while staying within budget.

I asked two reputable local firms about cold-rolled sheds, and they just shook their heads. “Maybe OK on a sheltered spot down south, but not with the wind and snow loads we get up here” was the verdict for my location (West of Wildest Wooler). Creaking when the shed flexes in the wind, and susceptible to accidental damage if hit from a direction that the designer had not allowed for.

I have a similar project in mind. At the moment I'm looking at a mild steel frame made from R/H Section 40 x 40 x 3mm.

Hollow section steel frames may involve a risk from moisture. How do you check for internal corrosion? What will happen if water freezes inside a stanchion? Think of all those hollow steel lamp posts with bubbling and corrosion a few inches above ground level.


In the end I built a 4.2m x 7.1m timber shed from scratch. Three bays, portal frames from 6"x2" treated CLS with plywood gussets at eaves and ridge, 4"x2" CLS purlins with OSB3 sarking and corrugated roof sheets, shiplap wall cladding. Much cheaper than anything I could buy (retired, so labour cost not a consideration). No condensation problems so far.

You won't get those problems if you cap all the stanchions!

This is my 'shed' although swmbo calls it a summerhouse!! I mixed the base with my mate and got a friendly brickie to build it for £500. Got all the double glazed windows brand new off EBAY for £200 and built the roof and covered it myself. Total cost (9 years ago) was just over £1200 ... it's enabled me to make a good living with my CNC products but now I'm retired it's just a great place to mess around in!!

Post cost about £10 gravel boards the same there 1ft so your talking around £90 plus concreate to fix the posts for every 6ft long 7ft high section, the second section is obviously cheaper one less post less concreate.

I built this out of concrete blocks, about 14 years ago. I had quotes for over £20k so decided to do it myself. Everything but pouring the base was done by me, dug the footings, 2 high of 6” blocks, filled with hardcore then a DPM, with 6” of mix-as-you-go wheelbarrowed in by some strapping lad.
Roof is proper tiles. It was a fun build, but I don’t have the energy to do anything like that again.

For garden shed size I don't really see any advantage working in steel. It only makes sense when the spans start to increase. I've built a couple of wooden sheds now and find I get a really sturdy shed for the same money as the same sized bought shed. I also now build the walls in four foot sections in my workshop and then assemble on site. Four foot is the width of standard osb sheet. I go with four cls stiffeners per section (16inch spacing). Once the walls are erected on site I house wrap it then batton (roofing battens) then the cladding. The osb really stiffened the shed.

A very sensible method for DIY, and basing it on OSB sheets helps prevent things from going off-square. Anybody planning a similar build might find it worth looking at the "Easy Timber Frame" website to see what timber sizes and materials they use (mainly for dwelling houses, so the prices might not be appropriate for a garden shed).
