Rental-free gas North Wales
I've been doing a fair bit of welding the last couple of days and the bottle of Argoshield 5 which has been lurking unused in The Shed for the last 12 years is getting low on gas. I've never paid for gas before, having had a friend in the trade. Still got the friend but he doesn't have that particular job where he could walk bottles out of the door anymore.
I recalled that I used to get my oxy-actetylene cylinders from the Bumble Bee Garage in Connah's Quay 30-odd years ago, so I Googled for them and found they're still going. Spoke to a very helpful guy yesterday who told me that he could supply a bottle of CO2 at £38.50, thereafter refills are £13.50, so I zipped down there today.
I had thought that it would be £38.50 plus the cost of a refill, but I was wrong and that included the refill - rental free. Coin of the realm changed hands and I left with a full pub-sized cylinder. I would have liked a dash of argon in the mix but what the heck? He can do coogar to order at £100 plus £30 per refill but the CO2 will do for my purposes.
Only downside is that my argon regulator doesn't fit the cylinder. When I got home I made a call to Clwyd Welding in Hawarden who tell me they can supply a neck to adapt my regulator to the CO2 cylinder for £7 or £8 so it's an easy fix. I could fire up the lathe and machine an adaptor out of brass bar instead but the internal seating for the regulator would be a pain to cut without making up an internal form tool.
If it's of use to anyone, the gas supplier is:
