Do the whole cill/sill, easier. Ten mole grips. Align it. Zap it. Tack every 6" then Whizz Straight lines down it. You'll spend more time tapping it into place (crucial part) than you will welding it. Just don't go full pelt where it meets the quarter. Give it cooling time.

You don't get a panel to start cutting it up with what you could of done patching. Makes no sense imo.

I might make a brace and Jack it across rear beam mount supports, thing is I have to replace three rear jacking panels as well and these go under the bream mounts.

Need to do some chopping!.

I've watched a few golf sill replacements and no-one has any bracing. May make a brace from door lock pin to front door hinges on both sides to be sure it doesn't move about?.

well, you need open and shut the door a lot, it's like doing a wing. you need to open and close the bonnet to get your line/gap.
always have a cup of tea and come back with fresh eyes too. sometimes it is a bit of a fark on being able to clamp in certain areas.

Was thinking of running a full length of angle iron internally and welding sill and floor to that?.

Think there's not much lip left to weld the sill bottom to?. Seems a bit excessive chopping floor out just for the sill seem.

Also MOT wise the sill is spot welded from factory so would plug welds be acceptable for sill bottom and door shut area?.

Going to spend a full day on each sill and take my time, was eyeing up a partial replacement last night and it'll just turn out in a mess I think.

Hope there's still a few good days left weather wise!.

Yes

I wouldn't bother bracing it unless it's completely rotten (and I don't think it is) but it won't do any harm.

Do one side at a time and leave the inner sills if you can.
If a serious amount of the inner sills needs replaced, I'd think again.
Open it up and see how bad it is before cutting up the new sills.

A good check is the door shuts, the gaps, alignment and closing shouldn't change when you remove metal.

Did a bit of investigation work today.

Took over an hour and a half to get wings off as someone had seam sealered them to death but that's another story..

Decided to strike a line under trim mount on each side and open the sills up, ironically it was only the bottom 20mm on each sill that was rotten oddly enough.

Went poking under the underseal and it all went a bit pear shaped at that point!.

Front offside jacking point and floor is rotten (near side is ok).

Started chopping beam mounts over panels out to work out best course of action there and again it was only the bottom that was rotten so decided to do a partial repair there then I have something to build the sills on to.

Debating wether to cut the floor panels out, will see what repair panels are available, otherwise will make a new piece of floor for the o/s front.

Bit disturbing what I swept up after grinding / wire brushing but at least it's moving forward..

The Milwaulkee M12 cutt-off tool is bloomin excellent!, took sills off in no time and nice and light!. Need a few 6ah batteries mind.

Bought one of these for front left and right jacking points, may as well do both as I'm that far in now!.

Might have an hour after work before sun sets working out my angle iron fitting (belt and braces!).

Seems like water has got under the underseal / seam seal and rotted the floor pan. Probably end up removing the lot by the end of it (not a nice job..).

Rained off this weekend.

My daughter asked for some LED's for her bedroom probably a year ago now, never moaned about it.

Anyway OCD Dad eventually steps in, commercial LED extrusion channels, 5050 waterproof LED strip.

Plenty of swearing while trying to solder it..

Job mainly done, she was cream crackered after Scout Camp so had to finish early.

She deserves it for helping out with the Golf ❤

I love real ale but for some reason that always ends up very badly very quickly!..

Great reading this post miss these days, the old volkstorque days of seeing build threads. Missed them.
Owned a vdub of some sort now for 35 years, decided to go modern now.... 98 t4 lol. Do love mk2 golfs.
Seeing the kids hard at it, gives me memories of me helping dad most weekends welding cars up, wearing the green goggles
