I was looking at a mask, as well as the price (300 - ouch) I was put off by the fact it was only available with fancy designs.
I'm not thrilled with the writing all over the Optrel 2.5 I've just bought. I know what it is, I don't want to advertise it to the rest of the world thanks...

The optrel is tidy I could happily live with that no prob, I just don't want skulls and trible all over it.

Just read through this thread, given that I will likely be in the US late this year, I suspect I will pick up a w70 true sight, I really like the size of the screen and the AAA batteries. Given my Miller elite is very green, patchy and doesn't switch on anymore despite new batteries

It looks like a nice lid the truesight 70. I have a policy of only buying lids with replaceable batteries after having 2 optrels fail on me, requiring cutting open and digging potting compound out. If it is as blue as the bh3 then it could be just the job.

The difference between the w70 and the wh70 is when it's inactive. The w70 is a light Amber shade and the wh70 more green. When they are activated to the light both are a lovely shade of blue the same as my new tech. The w70 has a lot more going for it though. Viewing area is huge and you have digital settings for welding cutting and grind mode. Not that that is a use to me as I only ever weld. The head gear is awesome. And yes 2 AAA battery's from the co op and your away. That's just brilliant and yet really embarrassing that none of the other top line lids would make that mod cos let's face it we'd all rather have the ability to change easy to get battery's on a mask rather than wait till the sealed ones die and chuck it away.

If you buy a white fibre metal helmet, get one with a "rubber band" not a ratchet strap. They are really good! I lost mine years ago. Can't see anywhere in UK to buy another.

A question here from a thicky - what exactly are these fibre-metal masks? They appear to be a fixed lens mask used by pipe welders but I'm not sure what the difference is between them and any old traditional helmet, the kind everybody has lying around? Apart from being available in white...?

They are the traditional American fixed shade lid, made by a company that used to be in business called fibre-metal, now owned by north safety. They're basically indestructible, hence why they are popular on the pipelines... They are made of a tough material.

Fibre metal is just the material but as far as I know it's just a bonded fibre glass. Very strong like old school fishing rods. The fibre metal welding masks and hard hats are populular amongst site and pipe line welders. Fixed shade glass some with s flip front.
If you were to turn up on the lines with a fancy auto darkening mask covered in skulls you'd be laughed off site.

Yeah it really puts it into perspective. That Jackson just kicks ass. The viewing area is monstrous you should see them in the flesh. The w70 has the baulder technology which is the really nice blue clear tint when welding. The wh70 is the same. Id have one tomorrow given half a chance. I keep asking my mate to sell it to me. He keeps telling me to p#ss off. And he's only got a 180 amp Esab smash mig. A mask like that is wasted lol.
