Audi/Skoda (Getrag) 6 speed 01E transaxle/gearbox.
Fitted in lots of things they shouldn't be in. They are great on smaller engines that rev but worse than useless on a V8 torque monsters, I have driven a few where you pull away in second gear because first is way too short, miss third, into forth for a very short period and straight into fifth.Even Lotus had to downrate that V8 rover engine they shoved heads on because that gearbox couldn't cope. Good gearbox but not for everything.Those bloody Renault boxes get everywhere...
Excellent. Presumably massively cheaper than a Porsche G50. Or probably cheaper than a Decent Renault UN1, which would probably be marginal in a car of the GT40's weight with the torque from a Lexus V8. I'll keep an eye out for one of the Getrag transaxles. I have a Renault UN1 'box in my home built single seater at present. It's now installed upside down in order to get a decent driveshaft angle. This requires the position of the crownwheel to be reversed in order not to have 5 reverse gears and 1 forward. Also I had to arrange for some lubrication to reach the now 'up in the air' gears. BTW, for any Renault anoraks, it does look like one of earlier 369 transmissions in the photo but has a Renault 369 selector housing on a UN1 'box.

1st gear was useless on the buggy even with 250bhp and 9krpm to go at.

The 01E in diesel guise is going to be a little bit long geared... I'll have to find the spreadsheet for it but theoretical top speed is well North of 200mph!If you think they're bad for a 1st gear mine is 4.45:1, with a 5.85:1 diff!
If you put that in a GT40 you'd probably be doing 9000rpm just parking at Tesco
6th will make a nice overdrive for motorway/autobahn use then!
I presume the 1UZ will pull very nicely from 1500 rpm so motorway cruising at just over 2000 should be nice.
I have one of these sat in my workshop waiting to go in my Surf. Spoken to lots that have messed around with them, and the early ones can push out pretty decent hp without having to mess around with the internals, even with forced induction. For me, leaving as standard is my choice, but if you are going to use an aftermarket ecu, then coil packs instead of plugs is a good mod to make.They used a lot of those in some of the offroaders before they started just dropping LS's in - they generally quite happily get 300 with throttle bodies and exhaust and a new ecu, 350 is doable with cams and compression and portwork. I saw one running 400 (although, it was "Yea, it's about 400 mate" and it gained 10bhp with every drink) with forged internals and a lot of rpms but it never stayed together.

Your set up looks great and IMHO the TB setup will look the part for the carTurbo's are the way to go if I wanted power. From what I gather high 500's are possible out of a stock unopened early engine. I'm really not after big power (and if I change my mind turbo's are of course still an option).
The *original* intention was to leave it *totally* stock until after IVA.
I ran into the problem however that it just didn't fit.
There was no room for the distributors.
No room to plug the leads in and they'd just break with engine movement even if I *could* fit them in.
Although in the grand scheme of things there is plenty of room at the front, there just isn't at the top due to the cams.
Without them however there is, if not plenty then at least sufficient room.
So as I *had* to lose the distributors to get things I needed something to replace them and COP/CNP would be the logical step. To fit those however I couldn't use the original ECU...and if I couldn't use the original ECU there was little point in sticking to the original plenum either.
Hence the ITB's...
Kind of a shame I spent ages cleaning up and repainting the original plenum, throttle body etc now but it's a big complicated mess in comparison!
