Cool, I'll be interested in how you get on. I assume you will need to make an umbilical cord to carry 2 x 20A cables and the cooling circuit ( 5mm silicone hose?) ending in some sort of heat proof handle.

not sure the coil may be ok for home use for the odd stuck bolt ect without being wate cooled, i guess i could make some coils from a different material like the snapon and other units use

not sure yet may try it without the water cooling, I may also be able to run it from my car battery

Do you have to water cool the copper coil?, we used HF induction heating for various processes in car industry and water cooled the copper coils/bars.

I think that is the idea but I can not see how the Snap On cools the coil, it looks like a selfcontained unit.

This is something we have been looking at (EMF Regs). Welders and such like all produce fields but according to the regs they are in the safe range. Haven't got my head fully round things as there is very little information, and what's out there isn't very clear.

Our MF (medium frequency) spot welders had a warning notice to people with IED's (implanted electronic device) not to go within so many metres of the equipment.

Are the coils on the commercial versions electrically insulated, they look to be very closely wound.

Edit: I guess high temperature fiber over braid, the sort used in light fittings would do.

yes they seem to have fibreglass type sleve over them, good idea if u are heating bolts ect with it

I don't realy need it for automotive use but a fun, usefull unusual thing to have round the workshop me thinks

Slightly off course, a couple of the Kemppi welding sets we have at work have a 'Hotspot' function, an electrode screws in the torch, and can be used to heat quite precisely, perfect for heating a bolt...
Never used it, but sounds good!
