help on compressors

newbie here,i recently sent back a sealey 50ltr 3hp compressor wouldnt take the nuts of a car wheel so i bought a ingersoll rand 90ltr 10bat 160 psi upright job off a bloke who lives close by,been in his family since new 1971 lol...so looking to update it abit new pressure switch ect wiring to be safe.ive noticed the wires from capacitor have melted slightly on the ends,is it ready for a new one?

also what dia hoses are best to use with impact gun and wrenches

and how do i find the cfm and fad if thats right lol also any way in making it more?

renew the capacitor there only cheap 10mm bore hose is good to use on air tools. what size motor is fitted on the compressor might give a bit of indication of the pump output and no u cant increase its output by speeding it up as u will damage the pump

not sure on pump atm its locked up at unit.i think its a 2hp 2800rpm if that helps i may be wrong tho...how do i know which cap to buy.it all works fine just dont like look of the melted wires from cap.

Does it work fine though that's the question, melted insulation on the wires doesn't sound healthy does it. Get some pics of the unit posted or get the model No of the compressor. The caps will usually have their value written on them.

its that old it doesent im afraid.i really want to replace it for peace of mind.i wownt run it properly untill its done and happy with it heres some pics i took when i viewed it...

its not a verry big one. it will be less than 14cfm .that type of comp were used in pub cellars mainly and garages for pumping tyres up. its a twin stage v twin the capacitor will be ok if u can shorten the flex back to good bit of cable that isnt perrished and join a new piece on

right ive cleaned it up re wired it as it had its own massive trip box which i didnt want in,so i took it out and put wires back just without the box and its tripped the house fuse box any idears dont see what ive done wrong...ill put some pics up

I think I`d have the guard off, remove the belts, spin the motor by hand and also spin the pump by hand, whats the HP of the motor??? 3 Hp. Thats a canny start current and a 13 amp pug will struggle with the start current as will some of the MCB types in the house board. may have to consider upgrading breakers. A knowlegable electrician will be along soon --I`m sure.


Information on how its wired to the mains will be a great help. Why scrap the "TRIP" box it probably has a NVR inside and incorporates motor protection??

without information of what u have conected it to fuse size through an rccd ect its dificult to say .without test gear your just guessing / u coul try running the motor direct from supply bypassing the cutout switch ect . if it still pops the problem is either motor knacked or wrong size fuse to run it .if it runs your problem is elswhere

Starting Compressor

I may have a similar "box" on mine if you get stuck with the wires, I`ll take a pic tomorrow, Bigger compressor but still Ingersol-14CuFt with a 3Hp motor, There was a thread a while ago on this or another forum and My 3 Hp was pulling about 70 amps starting up for a fraction of a second. A 13 amp fuse and Type A breaker dont stand a chance.
But double check what the wiring situation is and some one will advise accordingly.

is that not your pressure regulator switch, It will dissconnect the electric temporaily till the pressure drops sufficient and then it makes contact again it starts the motor till it reaches safe working pressure and cuts out again.
The 1 Hp motor should be more than happy on a 13 amp pug. Also the MCB that protects the circuit the socket is on should be quite happy

it looks like u have conected both neutrals together and live in and live out together aCROSS THE SWITCH TERMINALS rst are the feeds and uvw are the switched feeds take the neutrals out blue wires and put them into a conector .part the 2 browns leave one in s and put the other in to v and then test it out providing one set are the feed and the other set are to the motor .if thats the case u may have welded the contacts together in switch hopefully not

as Brightspark has already pointed out, your pressure switch is wired incorrectly! you have a dead short on live and neutral - thats why it tripped your breaker.

having just read the thread, you sent back the better compressor, the fact you state it wouldn't take the wheel nuts off a car would only have been down to air flow from the receiver to your impact wrench so either the outlet from the compressor was restricting the flow (maybe a cheap regulator supplied with it) your airline bore, the impact wrench or a combination of those, but one thing is for sure with only a 1hp motor its going to be a small pump and you will be running out of air very very quickly

I was resisting the urge to make the same point Snooper. Why on earth swap a modern compressor for something 40years old, that is way underpowered and probably passes oil through knackered rings?

The original compressor set up probably would have been a better choice. The one you have now is about as much use as a chocolate teapot for taking wheel nuts off. It will probably just cope with blowing tyres up.

the new one was broke when i sent it back they confirmed.believe me or not this thing whipped off 26mm landrover nuts been stood for 10plus years,ive sorted wiring just going to leave box in i reckon.i admit i thought it was bigger sure is heavy.do i need all those valves on side near regulator? any improvements please point out and how to get the best out of it...i shortened the wires for cap but rather a new one any links to show where i can get the right one mayb,thanks for the responses people...

Thats only because you had air in the receiver. It was not the compressor that got the nuts off it was the rattle gun using the air in the receiver. A good rattle gun will do that.

The point that is being made that a 1HP compressor is not going to keep up with anything but the lightest of demand. Get something stubborn that needs a lot of air and you will run out of wind and the motor will not be able to catch up.
