Poor design with that large step at the top of the ramp.

I did see that of course and I wasn't suggesting an exact copy, but taking the principle of the idea and developing it could overcome some of the balance (loading) issues that @Turbo pointed out with regard to the axle.
You could always "slam" it of course :-)

Strikes me as another one of those things that will keep coming back and haunting you . . . when pony shoves a paw through the side and has a half day out with that bloke with a winch and a funny smelling truck . . . every little problem " . . but you said it'd be okay .. " . . . by the time its been chopped around, reinforced, added to, its existing issues sorted (interesting tail lights ?) and every family member has been to offer their advice on why/why not/should've done it this way . . .

Look at the GVW a large number of small boxes are over weight with the GGs in & the powers that be are targeting just that at present, also do they have correct license endorsement for the weight.
Friend bought a lwb hi top twin wheel Transit bus thing even with all the seats out it was 2800Kg think max GVW 48000Kg forgot the license requirement going to move it on but sold the seats before he realize

They used to build their own trailers and I bought a 5ft x 4ft one around 35 years ago. I still have it although it needs the wood replacing again at the moment. Not surprising as it has been left outside for at least the last 20 years

The truck in the photos has a fair bit overhanging the rear wheels.
If I was doing it I would go for the ramp on the side to keep the weight forward.
If it's only for ponies maybe even partition the back off and tie them as far forward as possible. Put a foam cord panel across the back with a single access door then you could integrate cupboards into the rear side corners.

If it's your first build it may be easier/cheaper to find an existing horsebox as spares/repairs and just repair or rebuild it
Then you would only have to replace existing parts rather than worry about designing new ones.
Ramp springs can be a nightmare to get weighted correctly and it can take hours of messing.
That's ok if it's something you will then repeat but a lot of hassle for a one-off.

The best bargains are blown engines if it has a tilt cab that has been built over the top of. Horsebox people don't want to mess with engines and engine people don't want the hassle of taking the horsebox bit apart.
If you can do both you are laughing.

Most owners (should) have a pretty good idea of the animals weight to the nearest 25kg or so.
Unfortunately very few of them know how much a 25 litre drum of water weighs...

There have been a few horse box manufacturers taken to court over carrying capacities of 3.5 - 7.5 ton boxes. One had to refund a customer over 40k for selling her a 3 horse box with living that was overweight with one horse on board.

As mentioned above, total weight will be the limiting factor by the time you have horses, gear, water, living space etc.

Well I drove down to Pool today and bought the Iveco for £2150 delivered to @Brad93, body is I think quite suitable, engine started first time from cold, sounded good, no smoke, brakes sh1t after sitting for two years, will need discs, caliper rebuilds or replacement, needs HB cables, and some rust where the front of the cab mounts under the bulkhead, said to be a usual Iveco issue, has rather sad 225-65R16 tyres on 6.5j 16 et68 5X125 rims, anyone have any idea if there might be smaller dia. rims that would fit, just a thought to lower it a bit, or any decent std size tyres to help her out?

Ramp should not weigh any more than the doors we will remove, having seen it today I am still thinking a pony should happily go through the existing door gap at 40" , if the owner agrees than that would make the job a lot easier, at the moment she is loading them into a 7.5 ton transporter and that will have a much higher floor level and a steeper, but wider ramp, the Iveco body is actually a bit shorter inside than it looks so the pony or ponies will need to be well forward anyway, being delivered next week.

A standard stable door is more like 48".
I don't think you will get the owner to go along with a 40" wide doorway on it.
Plus you need to consider how much space you would need to get a dead one back out again in the event the worst should happen.

You have to walk the horse up the ramp too so you and pony need to fit

With a bit of pony whispering/cattle prod application . . .
