It's a very well known secret in the equestrian industry that all 3.5 ton Horse trucks are over the legal limits when being used as designed ie 2 horses / 2 pony's even. They are still extremely popular atleast in Ireland and the guards seem to turn a blind eye even worse I see another of people are not only travelling with two horses but are also towing a horse box behind essential transporting 4 horses with these vehicles totally overloaded. It's hard to blame people why buy incure the cost of keeping a big rigid lorry on the road and comply with the very strict rules when u can get away with a much cheaper alternative option. All with be well until there is a major accident or incident involving one of these and then the regs will be change and they will be no longer viable. Anyway that's just my views in it I have some knowledge on these trucks and horses as I used to work in the industry when u was younger so if the op has any questions I'd be happy the help if I could in any way
Yeah in fairness it's hard to blame people it's very expensive to buy a decent jeep then you need to buy a horse box do your trailer licence. Most people can't afford to own a jeep and car so then the jeep becomes the main vehicle for daily driving and as we know there are much more expensive than a car to keep on the road. Then if u go for a appropriate sized lorry ie over 3.5 ton you are hit with special licence the grey area of taco graphs and from owning these size trucks myself u would quite easily spend €1500/ €1000 per year the keep them maintained and mot,ed all just to go to a show on a Saturday or Sunday. So it not really a surprise people are using the smaller truck no trailer to have to reverse one purchase instead of two and can be driving on regular car licence. You forgot to mention the driving gig strapped to the back of the horse box!
A lady has some horses in one of our fields. She used to have a decent 4x4 for towing her horse box, recently changed to a Nissan Qashqai, max towing capacity 1500kg! Her horse box alone will be over a ton, never mind adding a very large mare & foal. She does eventing & travels all over Ireland, don't know how she gets away with it!
