tis one of those funny but nice doors that opens alongside the body, maybe there is enough room for the ramp behind the open door, or we put hindges on it but trying to minimise the work...

The sprinter that I had before my Tranny had a similar body to this Iveco and that had a large tailift plus a heavy sectional shutter, the type that slides along just under the roof, I made the tailift a bit taller and removed 300kg? of shutter, I will keep a good eye on the weight!

You are not going to want that step well inside the horse area so either fill in over the top of it and put a fold out step were the existing one is and a hinged door (which is a lot of work) or just put the ramp on the other side.
A o/s ramp is not ideal if you do need to get the horses out on a road but plenty of boxes/trailers have them on the o/s and it does not seem to make them harder to sell.
Not something I ever really hear people talking about so I wouldn't be bothered about putting one on the o/s myself.

We could get it weighed when I get some brakes on it, but the payload must be at least a ton, my tranny has 1.2 1.3 ton payload on a good day, plus the extra % for a wet load, plus a bit for luck!
We have converted a couple of 3.5's and struggled to get much more than a ton.
The best we ever did was just over 1100 but that was using alloy for the partitions and perspex for the windows. More work than was necessary but they wanted to hang a horse carridge on the back of it so we had to count every kg.
We also did a highly specked 7.5t which was more living area than horse area and that only ended up with a 1050kg capacity!
It's surprising really as most 3.5t Van's look huge and empty.
Especially when I have a regular 4-door pick-up truck with an 1100kg load capacity!

Get the truck weighed and then get some actual weights of the horses.
Most vets have mobile scales and are normally happy to bring them out if they are coming to the yard for something.
A welsh D is not a pony, it's a cob.
Designed for ploughing fields and pulling coal carts out of mines.
There are only 2 types of cob.
Really fit ones and really fat ones.
Either will be 500kg or so.
Arab horses vary but they don't vary much below 400kg.
If they are taking 2 horses out then they will be taking 2 people as well...

It might have 1000kg left in total as payload but with two people in the front the front axle will be close to its limit. Any added weight between the axles will add some to the front.
Its not just the total you have to be under but for each axel too.

and anything over 3500kg is now a total nightmare to run, where is the sense in that?

the same two horses in a trailer would add up to a good weight as well, not sure how you would tow that lot behind an electric car in a few years time!

anyhow this is about building it not the rights and wrongs of driving a 3.5 ton van in the UK, all help and advise apreciated, I will not be using it myself unless it is full of motorcycles. The owner can only drive up to 3.5 ton, will not tow a trailer, and is currently paying £100.00 a time to move her four legged friends from the stables to where ever she wants to ride them with her daughter, she has a (very) limited budget but is easy on the eyes so the overloading issue will maybe not be so bad as it would be for say me driving!

She has been warned, I said we need to weigh it before we start, after we finish and fully loaded to see if she can have a full tank of diesel and a packed lunch, or run on empty without a spare wheel, as I have done with my Tranny from time to time.
Not for personal use its as simple as running a 3500kg horsebox.

What changes to your vehicle catagories at age 70? I have up to 7.5ton used to have a class2 but did not renew my medical after my accident 17 years ago!

very, early 70's, don't want to get a 5ton hobby van and then find I cannot drive it on my licence in four years time!
