Rock hard crystals form on the item if you leave it in the bath for too long as in submerged, is my experience. No evaporation has taken place.

Thanks for that, might be obvious but would have missed the decreasing bit as well
I said earlier I'm debating adding just a dash of Fairy liquid to see if that speeds things up as in "lifting" the dirt off so the acid can do its thing.

Yes that's what I mean, fully submerged, the solution becomes saturated as water evaporates. The crystals dissolve off the item in hot water.

I'm going to degrease the parts separately as was thinking if you add fairy liquid (alkaline) to the citric (acid) solution it would neutralise the effect a bit

It does.
Washing soda and a current will slowly remove grease and rust.

If the Anode can be seen by the cathode it will work.
Hence why more Anodes the better it works.

Same here...I buy mine from amazon in the 5l buckets. I get the food safe stuff because we also use it indoors for cleaning the kettle and stuff like that (does a great job).
I have a large tub in the garage....stuff gets tossed in from time to time and sits in there for days/weeks sometimes. It gets weaker over time but still works....eventually I just tip it out and make up a fresh batch. As Parm says....I just stick the water in and then add a few cup fulls....I use one of those heaters for outdoor pools if I'm in a hurry but generally I just leave it soaking in there.
It really is excellent stuff...amazing what it can do with bits that look fit for the bin. As others have said when the rust is gone there can be pitting of the surface but that's the result of the rust not the acid.

Sometimes it’s really not worth over complicating things
If you need heat an aquarium heater stat for less than 10 quid will be good
If you don’t know the internet can be a very misleading and dangerous place
Not aimed at anyone, but I often wish folk worried more about stuff that’s really gonna cause harm than the precise ration of a product for de rusting

A builder I used to know was good at explaining the best ratio for anything, he always said to use plenty to one ratio

The only reason I quoted 4:1, 19:1 is I had no idea of how much to use so followed the Deox-C instructions. I love Deox-C but not the price.

Citric acid is quite forgiving. Just bung some in a wash bowl, add hot water, dunk in offending part

I have quoted that before, the lower ratio did a sterling job on a cast iron V8 engine block as the Bilt Hamber stuff was so expensive when mixing 50 gallons.

I think we've all been there...when I think of the money I've wasted on products over the years which I suspect were basically the same!
My painter Mr C is also converted...he saw me using it and asked what it was....when I told him it was basically powdered lemon juice he was a bit sceptical so I gave him a jam jar to try out. He's the same...spent fortunes on branded stuff over many decades....and it was so expensive it had to be used sparingly too!

What I really need is a swimming pool full for my Capri shell!
Here's a thought. What would happen if you were to do that with a shell and citric acid. I saw some posts on another forum about SPL acid dipping where the acid (I guess) had been lodged between sandwiched, spot welded panels and leached out over time. Got a feeling those areas rusted again. It was on a 280 Brooklands. Seem to recall some issues with the rinsing/neutralising process.

Oh a 280 Brooklands, My mate has one of those. He's quite particular about it. Only comes out of the garage once he's checked the long range weather forecast and there will be no rain. Car is in immaculate original condition
