I have a badly seized vice that electrolysis has failed to free up, I might give citric acid a go now. I have a chip fryer I liberated for smaller items but the element is removable. I can put the vice in a big plastic tank & hook the fryer element over the side to heat it.

What dilution rate do you use for the citric acid?

I went 4:1. Just treated citric acid as if it were Deox-C powder. Still tempted to do two tests with equally rusty components and add a smidge of detergent to one pot.

Next candidate for the citric acid treatment. MK1 Focus estate rear cross member. Got a couple of old baths available if I want them, might do as a container. Maybe paint black and leave in the Sun?

Just hoping there's enough metal left to make it worthwhile.

Has anyone tried using Oxalic acid as a bath, its great for rust stains on wood or fibre glass hull, just wonder if it would work like citric or better

Also for removing ink stains on wood.
Lead shot stains in oak.

Rust stains on stainless or chrome plated kitchen surfaces.

I remember many years ago an architect I was dealing with wanted some stainless steel bolts coloured. Green, black...can't remember but I'm sure colouring it would have involved oxalic acid. Put him off in the end by saying we couldn't guarantee it wouldn't affect the inherent corrosion properties of the stainless!

This Storm lantern was complete, but you can see the rust.



Out of the tank.

Mix was 1tbl spoon of citric acid to 1ltr of water.
Heated with a heater coil from a hand hot water heater.

The lantern was dried with a hot air paint stripper.

Normally I would leave it in for 24 hours, but this was completed in 6 hours.

To make a tank: My subframe measures 1200x400x350 thus exact volume is 168000000m3 unless I'm wrong? So that's 168000ml? Thus 168 litres?

Seems a lot?

Have I got my maths wrong?

When I've done bigish stuff in citric acid I've just done it half at a time. I have a plastic kitchen bin that I use. Those shallow plastic boxes for storing stuff under the bed are handy too. One of the best things about it is you can just pour it down the drain or on the garden when you've done.

Going for 19:1 for the big bath solution for the cross member 10kg of citric acid ordered tonight, just over £20.

Based on:

4:1 by volume = 250g / 1L

19:1 by volume = 250g / 4.75L

Required volume is 1200 x 400 s 350 so 168L thus just under 9kg at 19:1

Crazy thought.....just taken the old rear coil springs off this Focus subframe assembly. A bit rusty. 1) Can they be safely derusted in the citric acid bath? 2) How best to refinish them? Cheers

Thinking to mount the bath up on 4 bits of slot together scaffold. Maybe a couple of bits of Unistrut lengthways if the bath feet don't sit right. Fill it up with 160L water. Then a quick homemade solar thermal panel o/of some leftover Pex-Al-Pex. Got a scrap OSB board I can mount it on and paint black. I could really go to town and frame it, glaze it and even insulate! Let it do its thing and thermosyphon. All out of scrap of course

The first worry is maintaining 65degC?

IF you want to cut down the amount of citric you need then take up some of the excess volume with sealed containers full of water, pop bottles, milk bottles, 5l containers and the like.

Why are some thinking it has to be a box shaped tank?
If you excuse the pun, think outside the box.

Think along side the idea of a BIG plastic bag.

Place the item in a sealed bag, fill with the solution. Seal wait.

He'd need to constrain the bag in some way or it'll just flollop around and maybe not cover the entire piece. Being as it's only a subframe why not do it in two halves, there'll be a line across but meh, it's going to painted and not seen.

Pull the bag tight, if any bulges, support with Duct tape.

As long as there is a covering of the fluids it works well.
