I usually do the same with couch grass...just dig a deep hole and bury it. As long as its put deep enough it just dies and adds to the soil.

Unrelated to your ivy problem...a guy on our allotments works in the horticultural industry. He gave me a bag of cow manure pellets...have to say I've been quite impressed with the results so will be getting more. A lot easier to deal with than the err "fresh stuff".

If you put a strimmer on ivy won't you just end up with a lot more plants taking root?

I always pull and bag...I could be wrong...it's just what I've always done!

Dont think so, we have strimmed large areas of it and generally it cant compete with grass in the short term. Long term it may try to come back but easily delt with.

Same as ivy on trees. Only takes a moment to cut around the trunk that kills it... Why people let it grow 20 meters up is beyond me...

First time I've ever managed to beat the pigeons to the cherries. It's only a dwarf tree, so I'm more than happy with my little haul.

And a few punnets of soft fruit (Strawberries, Raspberries, Logonberries and Blackcurrents) from the Allotment over the last couple of days, with plenty more still to come.

Found with mine they were not really interested in cherries until most were past picking time. Perhaps they are not used to them yet?

What variety of cherry are they, sweet?

My elderly neighbour used to put her old stockings on the cherry tree...it looked very odd but it seemed to be very effective.

I've got a feeling it's Cherry "Sylvia" but as I'm rubbish at writing anything down or remembering what I've planted it could be anything.

Theyre nice sweet and juicy Cherries with small stones, that turn a really dark red if you leave them a bit longer (and risk ending up with fatter pigeons).

I'd put a net over it to stop the birds and ripen them a bit more, but laziness wins again (and as it's right next to the front door so it'd look a bit weird, and the neighbours already think I'm strange)

Very kind but tbh I don't like borrowing tools in case I break them. I could go out and buy one tomorrow, still might but it's more satisfying using something you've fixed!

Well if you get one that needs a new carb give me a shout. I have a brand new one that was slightly wrong for a repair I did recently. It ran ok when I fitted it, but the throttle cable came in from the wrong side so it fouled the air cleaner

In an effort to save water, is there any merit in drilling drainage holes in the side of a container rather than the base. This to have like a small reservoir in the base?

I've been attacking the front garden for the last week or so, I've so far filled 15 dustbins of mostly brambles and ivy. Ive cut down 3 three alder trees that are shooting for the light. There's a really nice large Acer tree hiding in this lot.
It still looks like I haven't touched the sides of this!

I used a simple pull saw pruner for any thick vines then painted the lower cut with SBK and diesel . I was able to pull the dead stuff off a few weeks later then attack gently with a strimmer to open up leaves & thin stems on the ground , then give it all a killer spray ( specifically kept for weed =killer ) mix of SBK and diesel , any new growth got the same treatment .

Now all I have to do is kill the crap that next door has grown up their side of the semi detached garage as it has invaded my King Span roof from their side and crept along the guttering which drains off into my drain . God only knows what it's like inside their garage as their roof is suffering tremendous rust moth damage & rot
