I usually do the same with couch grass...just dig a deep hole and bury it. As long as its put deep enough it just dies and adds to the soil.The ash formed the first layer of the organic "layer cake" in the bean trench
Unrelated to your ivy problem...a guy on our allotments works in the horticultural industry. He gave me a bag of cow manure pellets...have to say I've been quite impressed with the results so will be getting more. A lot easier to deal with than the err "fresh stuff".
