How to hang ring spanners?

I keep meaning to make a "sandwich board" for spanners. I often take my or SWMBO's car (very often ) to the BiLs, to use his open air, 2 post lift.

Means dragging tool boxes up, getting all the spanners out, lining them up in size order ready to grab.

I figure spend 10 minutes populating the board with hooks on etc.

When I bought my first house, in the garage, screwed to the wall, was a board with lots oflong right angled hooks screwed into it .. . no idea what it was for, so I unscrewed the hooks and put them and the board in the shed . . .

A decade and a house move later, with a larger collection of ring spanners, I realised what the board and hooks were for . . . found the board, and the hooks . . .

Owner of my first house was a motorbike enthusaiast, so I reckon he had his hanging . . .

I've got a box full of duplicate WW etc. spanners, sockets etc. I'll look them out if you're interested?.

I'll have a look see what's there. There's some foot and half long ones. My great uncle Harry used to be a bus mechanic (I've just had to read up on an alvis as I had no idea what one of those were but see they're tied to leyland) look like nice cars..

I sold my Alvis back in 1980 and decided to relive my youth by buying a replacement last year. I bought a new set of spanners and 1/2" drive sockets to get a basic set but various lengths and orientations are always good to have, as well as spares to modify for that one awkward little devil.

The one I sold in its as acquired state before I recommissioned it.

I prefer to put spanners and other tools away in drawers or cupboards, because all the stuff that's on "open" shelves gets covered in dust. I have quite a lot of old kitchen cabinets in my shed for storage, and I very much regret that when I got the first one, I removed all the doors and chucked them out, not realising how much dust would collect.

My hand tools are in Halford's cabinets. I find shadow boards unhelpful for general-purpose tools that are used away from the bench. I don't have enough tools or need to have dedicated shadow boards over the bench or other dedicated workspace.
I'm just a light-duty potterer (dilettante).

Are you missing any? I might have a few you can have in the depths of neverenter. Possibly britool. I'll have a look. They're the type of thing I'll grind up to make "special tools"

Sockets sometimes come handy for me to bang onto nackered headed bolts.
Other than that. Never use whit.

put the sizes on top so the spanners don't cover the numbers

Or do as I do and draw all the sizes on.... then realise you missed one out and it has to go at the end, to save relettering........

And I've done it every time I set a spanner rack up.

They go in a poster tube fairly well and postage isn’t as terrible as you might think. I got that huge spanner and three taper bits, cost me £12, Royal Mail.

If during their rummaging anybody comes across a Matador 200 ring spanner in size 9/16W & 5/8W I'd be interested!

It is the only size I'm now missing in my otherwise complete set, and apparently everybody else is too as they never seem to come up...

9/16 sadly, they do exist, so I know they were made - I've seen one before albeit in not great condition.
The 11/16W x 5/8W is far more common, but unfortunately not the one I'm missing.

I think the difference is depending on what series you are going for - so for example many sets will go 1/8 x 3/16 and then the next one will be 1/4 x 5/16, so you have one end with each size.
But some (like mine) went 1/8 x 3/16 and then the next is 3/16 x 1/4 - I think the idea being you always had a double of every size for the nut and bolt.

I guess depending on which series they make, dictates what they stick on the end of each spanner, which makes sense when you look at the efficiency of the size of the blank for forging rather than going by strict sequential sizes.
Currently mine go from 1/8 x 3/16 to 1 x 1.1/8 sequentially in doubles - minus the missing one of course. It would be nice to complete it, just for the sake of it really.

No offence - but I would say the entire point in having whitworth spanners is to preserve the largely unavailable original whitworth fixings on the vintage machinery you are working on without resorting to pounding on spanners and butchering fixings....
Just defeats the object of having the right tool.

Plus I'd love to see you pound a 14mm spanner on a 9/16W bolt.

(Pro tip: 9/16W is closer 25mm)

I had to pound on a 1/8 whitworth socket onto a very rusted nut on the baby Webb mower, and it got it off!

When I first bought a proper tool cabinet, that's how I was hoping it would end up looking. Unfortunately I've got too many things (if that's possible) to keep it that tidy.

I also use random whitworth spanners and sockets for stuff - it's surprising how many bits of my 2000 Audi (which is all metric) respond well to a whitworth socket - sometimes a much better fit than the correct metric one, especially when nuts are getting on a bit, or from aftermarket suppliers. I think I've mentioned before that my most recent ball joint actually needs a 3/4" AF spanner to tighten the nut up - it's not 18mm or 19mm. Aftermarket quality.

I only ask as I thought that, but then found out that some things on the new transit are 18.5mm

I mainly use Whitworth then Metric then A/F spanners. I tend to have a few sets on screws on the wall plus a few drawers in the the garage and shed. ( I have a Defender, who builds a vehicle a with every possible fastener type!)
