This week I've gone from a 24 year old landcruiser with not many toys and cable handbrake (never used as its automatic) To a 12 year old porsche cayenne. The difference in technology is insane and its taken a week of driving to get used to it.

Biggest difference is the LC didn't leak fluids like the porsche does so it needs to go back for a major repair.

Driving, the porsche by a long way. Ability to work on the LC by far, the porsche just has too much electronics and is designed in a way to make repairs longer and more difficult.

It doesn't even have a dip stick so you can manually check the oil level.

For instance to fix the rear main oil seal on the porsche is an engine out job. Apparently 50+ hours in labour and porsche do a complete engine reseal rather than just the RMS.

I'm waiting to see if mine is covered under their warranty of if it's going back to the garage I bought it from.

You surely mean Fenland if you walk off the cliff at Cromer it's a very long way down, assuming you don't get tangled up with the mountain goat horns (they use them to keep the grass cut)

Most of the norfolk mountain passes are closed off till April.

I can't really complain about the touchscreen in my new Ford Custom.
Heater settings are all shown along the bottom edge of the screen, and just need a single tap to change, which is easier than looking to see what direction a dial is pointed.
There's an external dash button for directly accessing the drive mode menu, to save a few taps on the screen.

One thing I do really like about the Ford setup, is it also doubles as the vehicle manual. If you're not sure about any setting, you just need to tap the help button, and you'll get an explanation, plus there is a full manual available on the screen.

Plus lots of things can be controlled via speech commands, but the old van had that as well, although that only done audio/phone control.

I have however tried some setups, where the screen just seems totally unintuitive, and taking multiple menus to change what seem like basic settings that should be simple to change.


Lane assistance does what it should, and some people may be surprised to learn, that if you indicate when you're supposed to, the lane assistance automatically cuts off. I always laugh at those complaining that it threw them back into the lane/surprised them/<insert seemingly random activation>, because what you're ultimately saying, is you're one of those drivers who doesn't bother to indicate when changing lanes.

Speed limit warning is annoying though, and was the first thing the sales rep showed me to turn off quickly when I collected the van

I've never used a hand brake on a manual xmission truck.

The big problem there is when someone gets in when parked on a hill, reaches for the key to start it, and automatically presses the clutch down . . .

Many years ago I was pulled over by the Police on a steep hill when I was driving my pretty distinctive Lancia Beta coupe (shell petrol pump red and yellow stripes stuck up the bonnet, roof and boot lid - not quite Shelby stripes . . ) - poorly working disc handbrake, so it needed to be in first to hold it . . .

One the plod looked like they were about to get in it after I got out . . . if they'd put their feet on the pedals it would have mated with their panda car behind it . . . I was slightly nervous!

(turned out my sister had been using the Lancia the weekend before to do silly things in an empty car park and someone reported it . . )

I don't slip the clutch holding on a hill either.

If you are driving proactively and using proper observation, timing and forward planning - very often there is no need to indicate. Very often on motorways looking ahead and behind, you can change lane with no,one close enough to need indication.
Often in less urban areas, you can be making manoeuvres with no-one to indicate to at all - so it becomes unnecessary.
There are already road markings and cats-eyes, ridged paint on hard shoulder lines etc to provide plenty of notice of road position to an attentive driver.
IMO while the lane assistance might "work as intended" I for one remain sceptical - and would find it an irritating intrusion.

Presumably using the foot brake to prevent rolling back .

Indicate to over take, sure when people are about. But you don’t have to indicate to return to the correct lane. So the cancelling lane assist on indicating is only useful some of the time. Also my main issue is it’s too sensitive if you are even remotely close to the line it starts beeping.

Definitely doesn't have one, none of them came with one and the tube is blanked. They have an oil level gauge in the info settings. I've ordered one from a touareg as they came with one as standard and I like to be able to manually see the oil level.

It took me ages to get used to but I quite like it now. The hill start I really like, but the rest you can keep!

I think lane keep works well on good roads which are well marked out.

I've had several occasions where it goes wrong and tries to drive the car out of the lane because it incorrectly thinks the lane is going somewhere else...usually due to a combination of poor road markings and say a turnoff which is on a bend.

I’ve got a mate that is one of these people that can’t leave his phone alone. Bought a vehicle with a touch screen/sat nav & drives along playing with that now, I hate going anywhere with him. I think they should be made illegal.
